dematerialisation in literature

Tell me Craner, are you saving this canonical reading completely for yourself or are you chronicling it somewhere?

I'd like to know, for example, why I should read Cicero's speeches.

My sense is you've waded in too deep, you're confused, you don't know whether it's a pleasure or a chore anymore, you yearn for release but feel compelled to see it through now, so you tell yourself its a pleasure, its a pleasure, being stuck in this dungeon is probably good for me, bread and water every day, but look at my abs!

I sense a rebuke for getting off topic is waiting in the wings.

If we combine Craner's reading of ancient literature with Jenks et al's familiarity with modern literature, we'll surely be able to arrive at the truth re: dematerialisation.

Why not both

That's a good question actually — has a fascist ever written a great novel?

if you count wyndham lewis, apparently some of his are alright? but i don't think they rank as greats tbh.

oh yeah and celine ofc.

he's the exception that proves the rule maybe?

could you say hemingway was a fascist? prob not

Maybe the very fact of us going so wildly offtopic almost instantly just goes to show why novels that go from A to B with proper character development etc. are still around but are no longer in tune with the times.

i have noticed this tendency, when anything vaguely big gun is raised. a load of people (i'm including myself) pile in with opinions, but after a page or so, it becomes very clear that no one has read the said big gun, then it descends into general chat. i mean, its like the pub innit. we're not writing books here

that's all too true, a lamentable lack of homework being done.

also i am always looking for the lazy way out - "give us your top 10 books craner and tell me everything about them so i don't have to read them!" "version tell me what basic channels are good!"

If you think about it though it makes sense - the constant rewards our brains are giving us just for refreshing dissensus, seeing a new post, replying, quoting, getting "ta's...

vs. sitting down with your phone switched off, opening to page 1 of a 500 page slab of a book which may or may not be the most boring book ever written.

NO CONTEST

woops

is not like other people
there's always the thing where you ask a question or try to start a discussion and people answer with a list of records or books, that's as old as the internet, just sayin'
