New Rap

Innovation has to be time bound it's all to do with the new. If it's distributed in space it's merely difference not progression.

I don't think I'm ready for curator status I'd rather just call the whole thing off. I was thinking about this last night though. The energy of digging is fundamentally a competitive energy or at least, a way to build status and past a certain age it dissipates.

lol never thought Luke would turn into the equivalent of a reactionary soulful house purist, but here we go grandad.

Don't hurt me, I'm tired, I don't get the hype with that tuneless noise, leave me with my lads down at the pub in surrey.

Progress is a bit of a false mirror though. There's only so far you can go with it until it loses its conceptual utility. There has never been an upward ascent in music like that globally ever.

i mean it's why I'm not a music critic right. You fundamentally have to be patriotic about your field. Cos either the new is worth paying attention to at all times, or the new has to reference the old. The former can means you end up bigging up any old dross for poptimist value (and that is what the project of poptimism was, not merely pop music but championing the new products of the industry at all times.) The latter more than not turns you into a j dilla real hip hop evangelist. It's not a dualism i like to work in.

I'm responding to that list as a model of engagement with music. I don't think it works. I think it sucks the life out of everything it touches.

I mean yeah of course it does because it's all about deconstructing lyrics. It's fundamentally rockist. That's what makes me laugh about Barty's championing of mumble rap. Everyone's sitting there treating it like a mystery that has to be unravelled, which, according to his reading should not have happened, or not been the foregrounding element. What he called rappedy rap (something i don't necessarily buy into but hey it will serve a useful purpose here.)

It's not just about the lyrics although the faux veneration of 'ghetto poetry' is obviously comical it's more about the search for novelty and authenticity and the way that's driven by the rap blogger model. I found this amazing Vietnamese noodle joint in the strip mall

Not to say the noodles are bad or the 'joint' doesn't deserve patronage. It's just the whole search and what it's predicated on is exhausting and depressing

this is why I'm still waiting for @Ach! to upload those north london grime sets. Then you will hear where the drill flow originally developed. Stulted grime noone listens to now but was a jumping off bord for all the so-called 'new' developments we've been talking about.

Axe FM and Heat FM. Neglected story in London.
