New Rap

had a listen to the new EST Gee/42 Dugg & billy woods/ preservation albums, two very different rap albums but i like them but i probably prefer the latter more so

I feel like i should like 42 Dugg more than i do but just on some of the Atlanta trap sounding stuff he comes off like just like another Atlanta rapper to me where as on the michigan beats he sounds more like himself, Gee is more consistant and just a very visceral rapper like he's trying to speed through his verse and you're just hanging on trying to follow him. The albums basically a brand exercise as their both on Yo Gotti's label now but its solid considering what's led to these two getting together.

woods/preservation more low key and "out of time" sounding but really solid and all the guests pull their weight on the album i'd be interested to see what people think of Gabe 'Nandez & Fatboi Sharif who are two of the more recent notable names to come up in underground rap especially Sharif cause i feel like some folk in here would like him cause they can spot his influences easier. i wish the former had a verse on the album and the latter at first i thought it was weird but i'm adjusting to it
I get that about Woods, he's been bigged up by The Wire and is cerebral/distanced from the street just enough to get praise outside of rap circles. But also, it's just fucking good. The beats on Aethiopes are out of this world, and he's a fantastic rapper. The reality matches if not exceeds the hype for once.

@WebEschatology I like the sound of Gabe, where's the best place to start? Does he have a tape yet? Following a deluge of new releases on Youtube does my head in (see RxNephew). Maybe this is an argument for getting Youtube Music, idk.

i love the beats i've been fuckin with Preservation since the Yen Lo album and he's got a singular out of time sound that i really like, woods as far as writing man don't get me started seriously i can talk about how good him and Elucid are on their own AND together

@DannyL with Gabe Nandez i'd say check this out

not got round to starting with anything yet 😳

but this is pretty damn funny...

i appreciate it when you put up tracks like these if only because it shows that there's still an audience for this kind of UK hip hop, i don't know how and if anything to see how these guys have been able to adapt to current tastes as far as underground rap but still

also @DannyL yeah of course following Rxk Nephew's youtube would do you in cause he's still putting out a new song every 2-3 days on his youtube. I've said it before but i feel like certain people on the internet like the idea and the fact of rappers putting out music at such a rapid pace more than actually listening to it

Popped up on apple music, just skimming, beat is a bit offkey, I like it

Definitely "music at a rapid pace more than actually listening to it"

I quite like the idea tbh but I don't see how you make any money off it at low levels

The thinking behind it is that by having so much out there it might not be much on its own but put together it makes alot

This is very true. I like Neph a lot but I find it just too much to assimilate.
Thanks for the Gabe links. Gonna check in the AM.

I like the idea of that kinda spontaneity that's enabled by the internet. Guess Lil B was the pioneer there? Plus rap's culture of freestyling and not needing polished vocals means it's easy enough to do - but in practice, I never go back to the tracks for a rewind.

It's a tough dilemma really because everything is a content machine now. I can see the argument for both sides and I guess it's worked for Rxk Nephew in some ways as I think you said people will pay for him to jump on their beats etc

But if you're not well renowned I think it can be a stumbling block sometimes as it doesn't really give anyone a focal point to anchor around- a solid tape or 6-8 strong tracks when you're starting out is a lot more effective than 50 rushed ones. I get the impression these young new york kids probably have little regional pockets of attention, though- that said. If your block is playing you then what does it matter what i think

in terms of right now yeah Lil B definitly is the marker, but really you can trace it all the way back to Tupac part of the mystique around his time at Death Row was the fact that there's stories of him recording alot of music even between when he was acting in movies

If you were in the studio with him it was expected that you would contribute no if ands or buts

I'm going check it. I've heard EST before and I like him. Is he associated with Sheff G?

I always loved Gunplay but he seemed to shine so bright a few years back, hard to think he's still going with that intensity. Gucci is the same.

@DannyL i mean he shined bright in part because he had a good string of guest verses but was also a massive massive cokehead so it was inevitable that his flame would burn out really quickly that PLUS the swastika tatoo, almost going to prison for life AND being on a label that wasn't geared towards his strengths it makes sense that his career is where it is now.

Gucci i mean i get why people mourn that he isn't delivering the goods like he did in the past but then again the mans put out enough good to arguably great songs to last a lifetime, some of them are probably on mixtapes you didn't bother to check the first time around just because of how much Gucci mane music is out there, imo to want anymore from him especially when he's like elder statesman status now is just greedy lol

Even when he was locked up for the last time the people who were in charge hard drives were STILL putting music out
