reza negarastani is also on this one, he's talking about the new comic he's done. there's an extract from years ago here

it's total gibberish, but they've now done the full thing

looks pretty good but you never know with these things

reza says that comics are good mediums for world-building alt reality type stories (he cites avatar and westworld as film and telly examples), cos they allow you to visually personify complex physical/mythical/abstract forces

interesting comments from keith the comics artist which may have some bearing on what neil was saying in the other thread... comics (and i suppose, by extension, movies) are collab efforts... there's a production line element to the classic style. so it's necessarily impersonal. but maybe ive misunderstood neil here.

anyone read mumbo jumbo by ishmael reed? it's going on my list cos i've heard about it a few times now. right after i've done with dostoyevsky's possessed. but i got sidetracked by the invisibles by grant morrison, which has been a bit disappointing tbh.
@yyaldrin 's right, Mumbo Jumbo is great. I read almost all of it on a 24 hour greyhound bus ride from Chicago to NY. Reed works out a very elaborate and robust mythos in that book. Apparently he had an influence on Pynchon.

Sounding better and better. Soon as I'm done with big fyodor I'm gonna track down a copy as my next biggie. Jane Austen will have to wait.

there was plenty chat about alan moores providence on last nights plague pod as well btw. general agreement about the grossness but people saying he just made explocit what lovecraft always heavily implied, that was his whole point.

chat room was great too, but seems unavail now. which is good actually. you had to be there.
I'll third mumbo jumbo. Its got this slap dash feel to it, like something really pissed Reed off and he threw it together in a night.

Apparently he had an influence on Pynchon.
The narrator in Gravity's Rainbow tells you to read him,

“Well, and keep in mind where those Masonic Mysteries came from in the first place. (Check out Ishmael Reed. He knows more about it than you’ll ever find here.)”

Yeah I've read that out of context before, but I haven't gotten that far in the book yet. Didn't know it was from there.

A lot of ringing endorsements for Ishmael Reed. There cant be many that get the kode9 AND Thomas pynchon seal of approval? And the young lads say he's OK, so I'll be following it up

I watched a thing with him on a panel with Huey P. Newton a while back which was cool, although he was the least interesting of the three speakers on that occasion.
