bandz ahoy
LoL sorry that was a bit snarky. I felt attacked, as is always the way with these matters of opinion, especially when expressed so bluntly: "his films are fucking boring'. Well, to you maybe.

I guess that's the way minority/iconoclastic opinions are often expressed, with a defensive aggression preempting the inevitable barrage of rejoinders.

I'm on the other side of this coin with plenty of things, the best example that springs to mind being football. I appreciate things about it but it's fundamentally uninteresting to me. But most of my friends are obsessed with it. Do I think football is innately boring? Of course not. I think I'm missing out on something.

Still, you've got to draw the line somewhere haven't you or we'd be unable to describe James Blunt as fucking terrible.

The Monks obviously, tho they're like their own totally weird thing

"My Generation" comes out October 65

this spaced out driving biz is sometime in 66

once we're into early 67 you have this (note the proto-motorik drumming too)

once it's 67 "psych" (which mostly isn't very good, but still) is in full post-Revolver etc swing

and once that happens it opens up new ground so Blue Cheer - the first true heavy psychedelic guitars - forms

and their first LP - with the famous cover of "Summertime Blues" - comes out in January 68

from there things go in a million directions

Zep and Sabbath both form in 68. going another direction, so does Can. Amon Duul II breaks off from Amon Duul I. and so on.

that's obv a v condensed version, leaving out a bunch of things

British blues has been going since the early 60s but only gets interesting (to me) once the Groundhogs get into their heavy/blown-out/total blues thing

and I'm only talking about western/global north/however you want to put it guitar musics here

which does include the rock scenes from other places - Latin America, Thailand, wherever

Well, to you maybe
absolutely, just me. I'm always very clear about that.

unlike some things, I do fully understand why people think his films are good, the technical perfection and innovation etc

I just find them boring to actually watch

otoh I'm a huge Tarkovsky stan and he is the most boring motherfucker ever so there you go

here's another big early touchstone that I forget

not in terms of heaviness or rawness - even for 66 - but the idea of just playing a single hypnotic groove with some nonsense over it for 14 goddamn minutes

live of course Floyd, the early Dead, etc were playing all kinds of marathon tranced-out thing, but it wasn't making it to record yet

oh yeah and The Sonics - definitely in the very highest tier of garage rock, and what people mean they call it 60s punk or whatever

idk for me garage rock is wading through a hundred mediocrities to find one gem, it's more pointing the way but occasionally it gets there

"Cinderella" is the one from them for sure

TBH I find much of the rock of the 50s more interesting than punk, the pure ebullient energy, often more subversive than its 70's shadow
I don't think you've listen to the right punk records pal, probably you need the weirder end of proto-punk and punk proper, Electric Eels and the like

doo wop I might have time for but I'd need it curated, not going to dig through it to find the gems that's for sure

I am that guy, or as close to it as we have. the (intermittent) resident guitars head.

people here mostly only like guitars when they're weird/danceable, which I do like, but I also like em straightforward, riffs, heavy, psychedelic, etc

ironic then how this thread has been driven entirely by you shitting on various guitar music and other people coming to its defense haha

oh yeah I guess it's relevant to mention that one thing I've done with quarantine is work on my own Dissensus Top 100 Guitar Canon

it's a comparatively low-priority project obv but once it's done I will do a thread and everything

it won't just be heavy psychedelic guitars/hardcore/etc either, but a union of where I think Dissensus and I meet on guitars

when did people around here get so thin-skinned, jesus

yall would not have done well with the flame wars of yore, when people actually said hurtful/fucked-up things pretty often

like I think Selected Ambient Works II is deathly boring but despite that droid + I are still friends + I deeply respect his musical opinions

Well, Im thinking of the UK mainly, but there is a rush from 50s stuff that isnt always there later, the collision of elemental particles, the wot you call it phase in full effect.

This is true TBF, but generally the first wave of Doo Wop is great, its when the Italians came along that things get a bit shit. Doesn't help that it was instantly ossified by a million oldies compilations.

Well, Im thinking of the UK mainly
that is fair, UK punk is mostly more boring and rote

UK protopunk having come - besides from America - mostly from glam/pub rock etc instead of art weirdos in NY, LA, and (amazingly) Ohio

where the UK wins massively in wot do u call it is the great sustained rush of protopunk ca 78-81 (or 82? blissblogger would need to rule)

whereas outside some truly homegrown things like no wave, US postpunk is (mostly) aping the UK with varying levels of interest/success
