Boxing

Apparently Mike Tyson's attempting to make a comeback?!? The clips going round are impressive, but dunno whether it would translate to him going however many rounds in a professional bout.

He said some time ago that he had tried to leave that world behind as much as possible since retiring. No boxing for exercise, not following current fights. He just wanted to get away from the person he was back then and was afraid that getting a whiff of that world would set something off in him and he'd be back in that zone.

It's weird that competetive fire some people have. Obviously he had in more vivid, intense, consuming sense than anybody - you could see that from how he fought.

I always liked boxing but never really got into it. You see sometimes when a match transcends strategy to become this mythological battle of wills. This teetering on the edge between intelligent duel and atavistic spectacle, chess or primal fight, it's fascinating to watch.

Yeah. And now he says,

"The gods of war have reawakened me, ignited my ego and want me to go to war again."

that is brilliant haha.

On the Joe Rogan interview he talked about being hypnotised by trainers as a 12-13 year old in order to break him into this savage animal in the ring. It's really fucked up.

Who's your money on, Tyson or Roy Jones Jr.?
I might be being cynical but what will just be 16 minutes of fun for Mike + RJJ is only being promoted as a 'fight' just for the betting markes really. That glove weight + no KO rule + remote judges = a draw is the most likely outcome. I'm glad the UK boxing scene is too preoccupied with Joyce V Dubois to get involved with all this.

My friend is suggesting that we take up boxing together. I'm thinking to give it a go if we can find a time when we are both free... has anyone ever done it? Any tips etc?

I guess that's why they say "fighting fit". Anyway, I hope we get this off the ground, that's part of me putting it here, means I have made it public that I will do it.

Yeah, it is intense, but if you want to get fit it's probably one of the best ways - would sweat buckets, feel like collapsing and be on an adrenalin surge (not in a bad way) for an hour or two after. I don't know if you smoke, but if you do you might want to cut back a bit or quit, because you will feel the effects of every shit habit (as well as drinking, junk food, etc) during training. And it might just be me, but there's this great bit when you get 'in the zone' and don't think about what you're doing and it all comes together naturally...(I was never great at it though).

I was hoping you would reply cos I thought I remembered you saying you had boxed. Did you get to the stage of actual fighting or did you just do sparring? I say "just" but it's extremely unlikely I will manage that so no insult intended.

Yes I do smoke and... I have pretty much every basic vice there is. Not long ago I was playing football every Monday and squash once or twice a week and I felt fitter than I had for ages but I've kinda let that slide... played footie on Monday and it was fine... played squash today, almost died.

Nah, I never got to the fighting stage, did some sparring but spent a lot of the time on the defensive. It's like trying to put all this footwork and these moves together while constantly guarding your head, and your heart going through the roof while someone's trying to clobber you and drive you backwards.
I'd say go for it, it's gruelling but kind of enjoyable. I've never played squash but what from I hear, it's a similar level of exertion.
Oh, and one tip...practice putting on your wraps in advance, so you're not fumbling around with them when you get there.
