the information you get on twitter isn't limited by the special interest of any indiviudal user
not in the same way as old media, but there are trade-offs. there's vastly less accountability, so it easy for unverified rumors to spread like wildfire.

and manipulation, which old media was/is vulnerable to, but in the same way or to the same degree

idk the ins and outs of platform - Twitter FB etc - manipulation but surely it is a booming field as we've seen in the last few years

ultimately a more democratic "shaping of reality" is almost definitely an improvement, but I wouldn't cheerlead for it so uncritically

surely we're headed toward a more complete Internet of Things merging of old/new media, the continuation of that process

all that is true. it's a very dangerous time. i was talking to you about this on the cancellations thread so im not really cheerleading, let alone uncritically. twitter is "did you hear what he said about your mum" amplified a billion fold. people are going to have to learn to navigate a very complicated information field and get a great deal wiser to how they are being played, by any number of factions and bad actors. that ultimately, is a good education to get.

also true. hence the right wing fear of 'shadow banning'. which i assume they are absolutely right about.

it is, if people get it. I'd be worried that most people won't get it. the evidence after 20+ years of Internet culture isn't hopeful.

greater availability of information hardens existing views

which seemed counterintuitive to me, but think about the monoculture - it creates commonalities

there are big downsides - it favors the status quo and the powerful, excludes people and groups outside its bounds, etc - but it does create commonality

whereas for a long time now a person has been to seek out only information sources that reinforce their view

which very much includes self-curating all our platform feeds

it's what we're doing now, for good or for ill. might as well look on the bright side.

anyway, on the immediate topic, I was impressed that the police chief immediately resigned after this latest police killing

and that the mayor of Atlanta immediately condemned it as unjustified (if not as criminal) and called for the officer to be not suspended, but fired

very hard to imagine that happening in a major American city 2-3 weeks ago

which backs up sufi's point about the almost incredible achievements of the last 2 weeks

I am reasonably hopeful of some level of police demilitarization going forward

otoh, COVID relief payments end in 6 weeks, and if things haven't calmed down by then, it could get very, very bad

this level of anger and unrest combined with tens of millions (more) people unable to pay rent or buy groceries

combined with an inevitable economic collapse, which relief has been considerably easing, and resulting possible financial system collapse, and more COVID

that feels like it could be end the republic as we know it stuff

wouldnt have been possible without social media. thats partly why the paranoid right are calling it americas colour revolution. top down planned revolt coordinated and fomented through social media.

gingerly kicking the statue. all politics displaced into the symbolic realm, the spectacle, the representation.

US troops tore down the sadaam statue to provide footage for new crews. this works in the same way.

You could literally see the very point where everything starting going wrong - or when it became obvious that everything was going to go wrong - when some absolute bellend got up onto the plinth after that statue had been torn down and raised a Stars'n'Stripes.

During a story about the Seattle protests that aired live Friday night, Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum reported on a Reddit post she said was evidence of infighting among activists involved in the city’s so-called “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.” There was just one problem: The post was clearly a joke referencing one of the most famous scenes from the 1975 comedy classic “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

I had been wondering whether Trump might try to shut down the internet etc to stop people communicating and documenting what was going on, but who knows who's doing it.
