'Woke capitalism' in 2020

I guess "we care for each other, we're fair to each other, we're there for each other" explains them fobbing off journos and seafarer unions who ask why their fucking ships keep going up in flames.

idk if this is woke capitalism but i'm applying for jobs rn and the applications keep asking me for my sexual orientation which frankly seems way too forward. i'm in favor of them attempting to diversify their hires and i have no problem giving them my race and gender and whatnot but the idea of leveraging my sexual history to gain a tiny leg up in the soul crushing job search makes me feel gross. just seems like its in a different category than the other two.

Where? I thought that was against the law

It's been common in the UK for years. I don't get it either - surely the way to reduce prejudice in hiring would be to have as *little* of this sort of information available to hiring managers as possible? It's like what @boxedjoy (I think) was complaining about the other day. The obvious thing to do is for HR to pass on CVs to hiring managers with the names redacted, so you can't tell the applicant's gender or whether they have a "foreign-sounding" name. Of course these things can't be masked when someone comes to interview, but it's my understanding that most of the discrimination happens before that, in the ratio of applicants who actually get invited in the first place.

The idea in the UK is to be asked questions about ethnicity, sexuality and other proctected characteristics for general monitoring purposes only.

So it should be a separate form completely which is not seen by the people doing the interview.

It would indeed be against the law to ask someone as part of an interview if they were gay or not. Usually.

no use for a witticism
woke capitalism = ethical / cultural gestures (as opposed to policies) as marketing

e.g. mcdonalds free range milk and rspca certified pork in certain brekky products

I read something the other day about an actress pretending to be disabled to get a role. I don't think she thought it through.

Oh, there's huge discrimination going on at interviews. A minor issue like height suddenly becomes a major factor. Current hiring practice on Skype may in fact have helped here.

I'm assuming she didn't think far enough ahead to realise she'd have to spend her life pretending to be disabled to get away with it.

If you think that's bad - forgive the DM link, but imagine doing the same thing to win a gold medal at the Paralympics against actual disabled athletes: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...m-pretended-disabled-win-Paralympic-gold.html

Although such a performance does warrant some kind of prize.

The again I've always regarded the Paralympics as anything goes, really. Like that Blade Runner guy. It should be called the cyberlympics; all technologies, drugs and general shifty performances allowed.
