'Woke capitalism' in 2020

“I felt like I owned myself, like that was a form of self-love to go back and redeem my dream, my path,” Ms. Ealey said. “I went from being heartbroken, lost, confused, and in just one year, I was able to turn that into having about half a million in assets.”

😂

The seamless transition from mental health and "wellness" rambling to business speak. The amount of shit people come out with is staggering. It reads like something from a parody real estate commercial.

Another funny one recently was someone going off on people on Twitter claiming it was ableist to expect writers to read, turning out to be a nepotism hire at Lockheed Martin who'd worked there for over a decade then trying to spin criticism of that as ableist too.

did you hear England won a football tournament, finally, 150 years of hurt, that’s harbouring a lot of historical misfortune, bad luck at penalties, shit managers, over-indulged overpaid man-children players

and they were actually coherent

There is a concerted effort on both "sides" of the media to really make this a thing these days. It's weird to me, clearly some real effort going into it from the people who pay for these opinions.

I can only guess that the pay-click model has proved that people are really invested in the anti-"woke" model and it's one of the few things making money. I guess it allows people to embrace prejudice and all that

I always think the real litmus test on this stuff is when you see retired relatives & see what they want to talk about. Early in the year i got the "so what do you think about all this woke shite" which meant that it must be big on the Daily Mail app

*

Re the article, no reason to doubt it's validity, lord knows this stuff is everywhere and fucking borin

It's interesting that the Independent is still framed in that article as being part of the "left" media, mind, when Lebedev has owned it for a few years now and its not even an actual newspaper anymore. May as well try and frame Buzzfeed news as part of the conversation. Maybe they have- there's no full detail on who they're actually deriving the statistics from? I couldn't think of ten national papers.

Considering there are really only 3 "left" newspapers left - Granuaid, the Mirror & the Star (is the Star even a paper) - i think Mr Goodwin has effectively revealed his sources with this little paragraph run-

An alternative and not necessarily inconsistent explanation is that the ideological gravity in British media newsrooms is —much like universities— on the move. After giving a talk at a conference in France, I was recently told by senior journalists at a major British newspaper that some of their junior colleagues —many of whom have come straight out of Oxbridge, from extremely privileged backgrounds— simply do not see themselves as objective journalists who are in the game to pursue truth.

Instead, they complained, their junior colleagues see themselves as deeply ideological ‘activists’ who want to use their positions of influence to preach their politics, spread the word, and ‘cancel’ perceived dissenters or nonconformists who refuse to adhere to the orthodoxy (as symbolised by the George Eaton scandal). In turn, they are making newsrooms far more moralistic, divisive, biased, and uncomfortable —something that we have all been able to witness now that social media has pulled back the curtain.

That can only be one paper in this country. I still look at the Guardian as they have the best football writing and the cleanest website but the commentary is an abomination, and a very clear split between two schools of thought, as above. Unless this is to be read the other way and it's moderate Tories concerned about mental rich kids who hate everything that isnt uber-right? I doubt it

Typed too much here but let's be honest, woke commentary/distaste is where the money is now. Everyone's bored of covid, no doubt critical gender theory will dominate the next 12 months.

Its fucking weird all this. And really dull as well

Ironically it was the Indy, more than the Grauniad, that really started this trend towards 'activist-journalism' among the left-leaning papers, at least as far as I remember.

On the one hand, it's annoying if you just want a more or less dispassionate analysis of some current event, rather than to be lectured or harangued. On the other, several of the right-wing papers operate almost exclusively on this basis - including the Telegraph, which is a problem for someone like my dad, who started reading it decades ago when it was a quality broadsheet with a conservative editorial slant, and who doesn't realise that it's since mutated into a mad reactionary comic barely any more objective than the Daily Mail.

The argument that it's because it takes the focus off economic stuff and doesn't threaten the overall structure is pretty convincing.

A company like Lockheed or Raytheon can do the same things it always has as long as it tweaks its presentation and a decent chunk of the left and centre will praise its progressiveness, the right will have something to rail against and the media will have a 'hot button issue' to bang on about, meanwhile the business itself is unchanged and the arms industry keeps chugging along.

The class background, social circles and general environment of journalists inevitably plays a part too.

It's unsurprising that people writing for The Guardian or NYT would find social issues much more pressing than economics as that's likely where most of the political conflict and friction in their lives comes from.

Tbh i actually think most of society is self-regulating on this sort of stuff anyway. The only people who are actually obsessed with all this woke shit are the professional commentariat who unfortunately still wish to attempt to dominate the discourse

I think the freedom of the Internet- we may bemoan it, but it is here- has allowed most people to really see through most of the shit that's used to conceal governmental or media failings. Regardless of political leaning you can see how easy things could fall if collective action really pushed hard enough - there are multiple examples from both "sides" since covid

It seems like now attempting to rally people around these false totems of spectral transgenders (etc), or i.e. the endless dismissal of contrary opinion is the last bastion of traditional media suppression and control

The corporation stuff this thread started about has morphed into the divider tool. It works though i guess

That thing I posted a while back about 'culture war' stuff going over poorly in Tory focus groups was encouraging.
