edginess i think is embaressing, personally, but its the preserve of the bullied and being bullied, even for 'white dudes' is trauma

even still - I said relatively comfortable for a reason

not that I'm surprised at this backlash. it's why edginess isn't worth bringing up (as I thought twice about it here).

there'll be someone come along to make some argument about moralizing or censorship or the true victims or etc

So what if those Norwegian black metal dudes grew up in one of the most "privileged" places in the world? That is still not a 1:1 correlation. Black metal is much less popular here in Denmark, and I guess we are also a bit privileged.

Having said that a lot of these types were quite privileged - public school, exposure to high art and subversive texts at a young age etc. All of this can also be quite brutalising of course but I'd say channelling that trauma into transgressive art becomes rarer and rarer the further down the class structure you get.

do you think that's true? depends how youre defining transgressive i suppose.

Well and how you define art.

This undercurrent of Nietzsche, Bataille, Dada, Aleister Crowley, all that. Performance art.

You can argue that someone like ODB is transgressive but it's not the same.

There are less posh people than the rest of us and I'd say there are more of them that become transgressive artists. Probably.

this is it. tho I'd change that to self-consciously transgressive art.

the direction of transgression is also important, as you mention ODB. or Mobb Deep or whoever.

and yeah terms have to be defined. anything can be read as "transgressive". which is where the self-consciousness comes in.

well this is why i wanted the terms defined becasue obviously theres lots of rap which is 'transgressive' Korn is transgressive, Limp Bizkit is transgressive. lots of gross out stuff, lots of shock, lots of offensive behaviour and language. not so many images cut out of S&M magazines and history books on the holcaust though.

Power electronics would just be so much more better if it had originated in a Delhi slum.

Just as an example of the kind of people we are dealing with here - there is this compilation of power electronics from Africa:

Africa - the dark continent of the tyrants, the beautiful girls, the bizarre rituals, the tropical fruits, the pygmies, the guns, the mercenaries, the tribal wars, the unusual diseases, the abject poverty, the sumptuous riches, the widespread executions, the praetorian colonialists, the exotic wildlife - and the music.

Except all of these acts were made up. They were literally a privileged white man pretending to be a bunch of people from Africa. I don't even particularly like the term privilege, but this is it.
