"privilege" is a loaded term in current discourse, which is why if you look I haven't used it once in this thread until now

I did use the word "comfort", referring to (again, relative) material comfort, which is undeniably true

if anyone has the wrong idea i think all that sort of thing is gross
I (and john, I reckon) know that

clarifying things is good

and I hear your point that edginess can be linked to alienation. I immediately think of people like Eric Harris + Dylan Klebold.

edginess implies insincerity - not necessarily of belief (tho possibly) but of action - it is specifically intended to provoke

what you're describing is more like a defensive mechanism, tho they probably overlap

we're talking about people made careers out of producing and selling edginess, even if there wasn't an exact term for it at the time

the Norwegian black metal guys are a little different, since their edginess wasn't directly incorporated into their art, only indirectly in attitude/aesthetic

so they weren't selling edginess directly like Whitehouse etc

the difference between transgression and edginess

edginess has a sine qua non - disapproval

transgressive art can exist on its own terms. it is transgressive with or without disapproval.

the Norwegian black metal guys
I thought it was understood but since we're clarifying I'll be more exact

I'm only talking about the initial generation - mainly Varg + Euronymous, perhaps a few of the people around them like Snorre Ruch or Bard Eithun

not black metal in general or even Norwegian black metal in general (tho Gaahl is an edgy mfer)

Varg's Nazi etc bullshit is well known, Euronymous's fascination w/the most extreme totalitarian communist regimes less so, you can read about it here

the quotes are nuts

I’ve been very interested in communism for a while, especially the extreme countries like Albania, Kampuchea, North Korea and so on. I have to say that I have studied so much that I know that real communism would be the best possible system, BUT as I HATE people I don’t want them to have a good time, I’d like to see them rot under communist dictatorship. Ceausescu was great, we need more people like him, Stalin, Pol Pot too. I’ve been to Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the (good) old days, and was about to go to Albania, although it didn’t turn out. Poland was quite all right, but it could have been even MORE gray and depressing. I like secret police, cold war and worshiping of dictators. I like bugging and spying on people, torture chambers in police stations and that people suddenly “disappear”."

edgier nonsense you could not imagine
People know we are sick, and we give a fuck. Thats what we live (die) for... Stalinism. We hate does 'PEACE, LOVE and DEMOCRACY'-ideas. WAR, SODOMY and DICTATION! We support all extreme and oppressed states like the old ALBANIA, IRAN , KAMPUCHEA under the RED KHMERS and so on. People who are dying and suffering!

it's quite funny though. it reminds me of Craner's story of having to talk Mark out of writing an essay in praise of North Korea.

we were just talking about that very thing in another thread. Cut Hands came up, in comparison to actual cut hands in the Belgian Congo.

Some reasonable beats on that one as far as I remember. A lot of "worried" articles in The Wire as well just as he intended.

It wasn't that good a project though, Congotronics was of course better and realer (= analogue)

this is the dynamic isnt it. youre right. winding up people who are insipid and ask to be wound up. i dont personally agree with it really. it's like that popular game that goes, wind up a liberal and then when they get wound up and call you a cunt you go, well thats not very tolerant is it.

Just as an example of the kind of people we are dealing with here - there is this compilation of power electronics from Africa:

Except all of these acts were made up. They were literally a privileged white man pretending to be a bunch of people from Africa. I don't even particularly like the term privilege, but this is it.

Yeah I remember that created a bit of a buzz as well.

Good recent move dealing with lines between faux and real edgy romantizising of colonial times is Cold Case Hammerskiold. A disturbing movie indeed.

No I find it stupid as well. I don't like their tactics, it's imbecile. Sometimes the music can be alright or "interesting" though

I'm not up to speed enough on scenes and structures to know how much of a general thing this is, but I always find it weird that when we go out to see some sort of ear-splitting racket, it's always either sex / power / death / magick weirdos - maybe in their slightly more dignified old age now - or "cool dad" types in jumpers and converse, with very little in between. Maybe some sort of convergence of weirdo industrial and experimental psych? Not sure.
