all we did in college, aside from class, was go see punk and new wave bands. if anyone tried to indoctrinate us, we would have laughed in their face. different times.

constant escape

winter withered, warm
the reason barty is so scared of the culture wars is that he lost his sister to it
Well if we assume that a social movement, as a societal thesis (or hypothesis?), needs to have a reach that exceeds its grasp, what can we really say about its constituents? That they will inevitably become convinced of it, overtaken by it?

And what do we lose if we assume that people can be irrevocably "lost" in these movements? Not sure how strictly you meant it, Luka - I might be overreading this. The degree to which she is lost is the degree to which the ideology determines her?

But I do think you bring up a good point. Sooner or later, should certain trends continue, the extremities of socially progressive ideologies will yield more and more false positives - how drastic can that price be? False positive as, say, the person who gets fired on false accusations of some type of bigotry. However much of an exception this is to the rule, might it need to become more common?

perhaps we need a safe word - so if you are getting exasperated and people are taking your joke the wrong way, you just type 'rhubarb' or something.

i think we talk about these things, in an endlessly reductive way, cos we are really talking around other things that we don't want to actually talk about. sometimes the conversation is good and ends with some actual interesting revelation.

other times, people end up boxed into corners they are not even arsed about, just cos of the adversarial nature of the forum and the pile on aspect. and cos they don't wanna say what they actually wanna say, cos then things really could go south, but actually probably won't.

its cos we are not interacting in physical space i think, or at least that's an aspect. this is good and bad tho. so much more freedom, but equally, i'd like it if dissensus was a pub at the end of my road as well.

I know it's not really the point here, but I never imagined Peter Hitchens would wear a rucksack.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Luka linked me to a P Hitchens article in the Mail the other day and it was a great read.

Gave me a really valuable insight into the right wing mindset. And the glamour and drama of that worldview. Everything's going to shit, the barbarians are at the gates, how exciting!

His Mail on Sunday column's funny. You usually get a serious bit, something about weed being the root of all evil then an anecdote about not being able to find a proper chocolate bar in a health food shop or something.

He doesn't have the horrible snarl of Christopher. He started to look genuinely evil after a while.

I am going to answer this but first I have to drink another coffee and work out exactly what it means

It's always shaming when someone give a serious and thoughtful response to some glib and careless remark

I don't know bartys sister but as I understand it she's lost her spark by being sanctimonious and pious which I suppose you could describe as being determined by ideology.
