There’s loads of vinyl which is unsellable.

Classical (except weird stuff)
Easy listening (ditto)
Pop compilations from the 1970s
stuff like Five Star, Paul Young and other top 50 botherers
Landfill house music from the 1990s
Soundtracks for teen films

There’s a charity shop near me that’s full of it.

I think vinyl is an interesting medium as lots of it will be mashed up so even the huge editions might not have loads still in mint condition.

But yeah the 2000ADs I had boxes of in my parents attic ended up being given away to some grateful kid. Nobody else was interested.

I'm pretty sure Madteo used to do mixes of stuff he called "Street Wax" which was just shit he found in bargain bins and stuff.

Yeah there is loads of vinyl that is worth nothing for sure... I don't think there was a specific era of general oversupply though like the one he refers to with baseball cards. I mean, there were crazes - say house comes along or whatever - and suddenly they put out LOADS of stuff that fits the bill, but I'm not aware of any period where there were suddenly too many records being made across the board.

There's always exceptions though... isn't there one of those Now That's What I Call Music ones which is really collectible (CD not vinyl but you get the point).

yeah there’s levels of initiation into the dark art of record collecting. Some get lucky, some go mad.

The story I always tell now is someone dumping about 200 church organ LPs in that same charity shop I mentioned. Most of them are still there about two years later.

I got halfway home and remembered. Went back and found about ten LPs by badass avant garde organ nutter Messiaen in there. amazing stuff.

I found Peter Wyngarde's infamous "Rape" LP by the bins on my estate last week. Because I am a record saddo, I knew what it was and took it home. Probably not in good enough nick to sell but nice to find.

Guaranteed to upset almost everyone with his comedy rape skits which are also hilariously racist. The music is good though - It's as if Bernard Manning cut an LP with Morricone.

A large part of my alltime favorites are apparently 1euro records on discogs. The stuff that go for crazy amounts are almost always classics/seminal records or records that "represents" a certain genre or scene or timeframe. The best records are of course those completely idiosyncratic ones that do nothing of that and was failures to begin with.

Although in recent years quite a few UKG records which were never considered seminal classics within the original scene (or by the Fact Mag/Hyperdub/Post-Dubstep co-option of the late 2000s), and would never have accorded more than a tenner on Discogs, have rocketed in price having been played out by Resident Advisor type House/Techno DJs and Third's NTS digger friends, either at festivals or on platforms such as Boiler Room where they reached audiences with no (or little) prior interest in UKG - for example: 'Sirus - Grouch', 'Booty Fool - Booty Fool 3', 'Antonio - Hyperfunk' (I realise this last one is a classic of sorts but it's undergone the same process of price inflation after being played in this set.)

Skee Mask and the Zenker Brothers (the guys behind the Ilian Tape label) are playing a lot of Hardcore, UKG, and UK Funky in their sets with a similar effect i.e. opening up these tracks to European and House/Techno audiences.
