are there any fantasies besides performing a heroic act to rescue a girl/winning at sports/being famous? that's everything isn't it? just re-running these same snippets of film back again and again

it's not something to get creative with. there's the whole region of sex fantasy but that's a thread for tomorrow

daydreams are involuntary, you can't really make them more creative. I mean, you can, but then you are consciously inserting yourself and controlling it. dreams shouldn't be controlled.

They’re the big ones. But there’s obviously loads of vaguely narcissistic fantasy about doing more mundane things. Imagining yourself doing kind acts, and others reactions. I think you’re right that the daydreams can often be fairly basic, much like our inner critic making fairly boring observations about how shite you are. Both magical and catastrophic thinking can follow fairly uncreative scripts

mine have never been involuntary. im surprised to hear you say that

This gets interesting. I think I agree with Leo that daydreams are sweeping me along, and I do think they aren’t fully mine but there’s elements of control, I can tweak the settings and let the imagination run somewhere else

yeah, exactly. daydreams can be tweaked but if you stage manage them, then you're just playacting. daydreams are like sleep dreams, situations that just present themselves.

you just reminded me of this horrible thing i used to get when i was a child trying to go to sleep, a tape loop of going down a slide barefoot into pins or broken glass. or having to walk barefoot on them. years and years. tormented.

That sounds more like an intrusive thought than a fantasy. I had one like that where I couldn't stop imagining "shaving" my front teeth with a Gillette razor.

Intrusive thoughts yes. They’re usually about quite violent things happening to my body. One I had a lot last year was... space collapsing in so I’d be crushed, splatted by everything around me condensing like I was a black hole sucking in matter.

The most common one's probably jumping off something tall you're stood on or crashing your car.
