Mark Wahlberg apologised today for claiming that he could have stopped one of the 9/11 planes crashing into the World Trade Center, admitting that his comments were 'ridiculous' and 'irresponsible'.

He was scheduled to be on one of the Boston-to-Los Angeles flights that crashed into the twin towers, but cancelled his ticket a few days before the tragedy struck.

Mr Wahlberg claims the events of September 11, 2001, would have played out differently if he had kept his seat.

'If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did,' he said.

'There would have been a lot of blood in that first class cabin and then me saying "OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry".'

Yeah I've probably landed a malfunctioning / hi-jacked plane in my head at least once. Haven't went there in a while, probably because I like flying less the more I do it.

i thought of one. the idea of being under the eyes of cosmic watchmen who select for superior specimens and put them through a training regime, sorting for this or that trait, and assigning them to classes, such as for instance Plato's watchdogs, fierce, loyal, growling types. and me being selected as illuminati and then onwards up the ranks to G-O-D.

a process of unwiring the 'instincts' and undoing the programming to achieve total freedom and thus total POWER!

Yes, this takes us beyond the superhero / sports star / lothario stuff. there's lots of 'the chosen one' fantasies in there now you mention it. I had a lot of pokemon based level-up evolution fantasy as a young teen. HE'S ASSUMING HIS FINAL FORM! WHUUURRRRRRRR BATOOOOOOOOSH

the levels is definitely a good one. there's a moralising part of me, nagging, tiresome, that warns me not to buy into it too much but at the same time it's a natural and irrrsistable model to use, at least when you are young and coming into your magical powers.

the old fantasies of fame and adoration fell away at a certain point and were replaced by these far more ambitious fantasies. not enjoying a complacent self congratulatory conversation with Stephen Fry at an awards ceremony anymore, champagne bubbles wriggling vivaciously in the flute.

And much of these would be based on precociousness, and the angst around your development through puberty. He's a level 9 and he's only 12!

did they still do tests to tell you your reading age when you were a child? that was a real life version of that.

that's an interesting one, getting rid of the 'lower' stuff. I remember another, streams of shit, piss, snot and dirt, ear wax, streaming out of my body in continuous jets so i would never have to deal with them again.

that sounds druggy. mind you my one was too. i was suppose once youve taken enough/too many drugs everything you think becomes druggy. like that Sadie Plant line about every writer on drugs eventually becomes a ghost writer for the drug. there's definitely something in that.

This is a good topic. I often wonder what happens to the imagination as you get older. I think it keeps plugging away, but about relatively mundane/petty shit.

One I found hilarious at the time: caught myself imagining myself handing out fruit to the homeless out of the goodness of my heart, and being fortuitously spotted in the act by the woman I was infatuated with. (She couldn't get enough of this, of course.)

I can't remember, but i was very academically competitive until I hit about 14, so it is that definitely.

I've read on Reddit that people help themselves go asleep by imagining entire fantastical worlds in their head.

My default when I go to bed is to start sexually fantasising so I don't think about death.

I've had soooo many rage induced fantasies of violent revenge on people who slight me in some fairly minor way.

And also about people who haven't even slighted me, but I imagine them slighting me, and then imaging taking violent revenge.

I'm absolutely full of rage that flares up at the slightest provocation. But I just turn it all inwards because I'm also a complete coward.

I love that guy and EVERYTHING he's done.

Seriously, though, I find sexual fantasies are so compelling that they block out any other thoughts.

I guess this is just obvious stuff from Freud, isn't it, losing yourself in sex. I just don't have the option of actually losing myself in SEX, so it's wrestling with my penis every night instead.
