Grapejuice is good on the Surkhov effect. It's prefigured in Robert Anton Wilson and all those LSD pranksters. Operation Mindfuck.

There's something very definite about this book. What he's saying doesn't seem too open to interpretation. The references and allusions are all very specific. They definitely mean certain things that he's trying to communicate to you. I'm starting to get the distinction between modernism and postmodernism on a bit more of a gut level now.

I was going to say importance has to be related to popularity/impact.

No doubt some person nobody's heard of at this point has invented or written something that will prove to be hugely influential and important.

It's funny how the important people from around the turn of the century no longer seem very 21st century - George Bush Jr, for example, seems somehow passé compared to Trump, the Frankenstein's monster of social media.

You've been shunning Ladswhatsapp corpse but Craner posted pictures of his bookshelves and Barty pointed out that it's all biographies of Great Men (and Sarah Palin)

Didn't the Koch brothers oppose Trump's nomination?

Obviously they prepared the ground for him but I'm not sure if they're on board the Trump train.

I didn't say they were all powerful. Their history is full of humiliating failures

Reality can be very resistant, stubborn, sluggish. You can throw billions of dollars at it and it won't respond the way you want it to. Perseverance helps though and they had that.

One of the reasons I really like Adam Curtis, apart from the fact Craner hates him, is that he likes to pick out this or that relatively obscure person as a grand architect of contemporary reality. Some Muslim Brotherhood cleric-intellectual, Cold War academic or think tank maven. You could do that with a lot of the more unhygienic elements of today's online world. And Neil Strauss would be in there.

I made my peace with this guy -- and I appreciate I was slow on the uptake here but then I think he also misled himself a little bit, at least around the time of The Power of Nightmares -- once I realised he was actually a conceptual artist, rather than a documentary maker.
