30 days of jail over 1000 euro? What is this possibly for? What a silly, obscene system, to lock people up over 1000 euros

If I can ask—if this person can't scrape together 1000 euros to stay free, how're they paying rent or living?

I can pay my rent and bills but I don't have that kind of money left over and I doubt most people I know would too.

prisons in berlin are full of people who have been caught dodging fares in public transport and weren't able to pay their fines. it is obscene yes, and not that it should matter, but even from an economical standpoint it doesn't make sense, incarcerating these people actually costs more.

That's wild, I had no idea. They put people in prison for dodging bus fares? Insane. Even America, prison capital of the world, doesn't do shit like that.

Berlin's transport system genuinely blows my mind. People talk about London and the tube but I think Berlin's mix of trams and rail is incredible and the ease and speed you can get from A to B, even as a clueless tourist with no language skills, is so impressive.

You go and sit in a waiting room full of daughters and wives full of unassuagable pain, horrible despair sinking into your skin

i was sitting on a bench last week waiting on a friend and an old man sat down next to me. he had to catch his breath as he was carrying a lot of groceries. i asked him if i could help him and he told me it would help him a lot of i could carry his groceries down to his apartment. he even offered me some money which i refused of course. anyway, once in his flat he offered me a glass of whisky which i happily accepted and he started telling me about his family. turned out his father was a famous gdr spy known as the spy from teufelsberg (where the usa had a listening post). i didn't know if i could believe him as a lot of people i meet on the street tell me the wildest stories but he told me i should put in his fathers name on youtube and it showed a documentary about the story in which he was shown as well. you can read the story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hüseyin_Yıldırım
