it sure seems like in a superficial sense there is less space, right? like, you can't stretch the boundaries of music by making a composition that's just silence. nowhere further to go in that direction, surely. but maybe that's only one way to approach originality...

imo it is and it isn't. there's a part of me that's wary of that whole "orginality = recontextualizing something familiar as Art" game. it's just stamping your name on something that's been around forever. people didn't start hearing ambient sound as "musical" with john cage. whereas i genuinely don't think there was any sonic experience much like gesang 10 years before it was created.

mcluhan makes a big thing of perspective being a new way to percieve the world. almost as if it were creating a new reality. i think you could make a similar case for impressionism and cubism. in a slightly different way you can talk about the romantics creating the aesthetic effects of the sublime. landscape artists the aesthetic effects of landscapes. whistler and the night. all this kind of thing.
debussy, schoenberg, messiaen, airplane flight
none of which could be confused with his music i don't think
