If you could do it all again

@john eden Well put. Burroughs spent his life writing to tackle Control after shooting his wife, so he’d know.

Imagine if Mrs Burroughs had survived, but with locked-in syndrome. She’d be mulling over a few choices too.

i think you associate it with art and poetry. the soul as a kind of melancholy mithering.
“The only private language I know is self-exaggeration. I think I've grown a second self in this room. It's the self-important fool that keeps the writer going. I exaggerate the pain of writing, the pain of solitude, the failure, the rage, the confusion, the helplessness, the fear, the humiliation. The narrower the boundaries of my life, the more I exaggerate myself. If the pain is real, why do I inflate it? Maybe this is the only pleasure I'm allowed.”

Sounds like you got back on your feet eventually though, so well done.

It ate her alive. Not a lot could compete with calis, doves, red and blacks and lemon and lime E’s from the previous decade, so I’d kind of got it out of my system. After getting a placement I genuinely thought was the least likely to materialise, I stayed away from everything except booze and a joint. With hindsight I knew she was trouble, but she was from a good, solid home, bright as fuck, creative musically but manipulating to another level. Narcissistic personalities are adroit at control and they can reveal themselves v v slowly over time, so you even begin questioning whether it’s you losing it. She would ask questions like “are you ok, you seem really down?” when I was tip top.

Retrospectively, we’re all wise. You either chalk it down to experience, or get bitter like Phil Leotardo

Is it useful to sometimes see this as just feeling sorry for yourself? Pointless self-pity engulfing everything. This is why Jordan Peterson is famous. But even he didn't succeed in the end. Luka did though, he's going to tell us how. It's something about the cut, drawing lines and boundaries. Fuck it, that's enough! Pull yourself together man!

She’s overdosed 2005 in a massage parlour. At some point she started using smack and that combination can only be taken so far.

Ever known an addict? It walls them off from the world. Interventions didn’t help. If anything she withdrew more into lies and stealing. Still in touch with her brother, but he’s never fully recovered from it.

Tom Hardy said when he was working on Bronson he ended up speaking to the man himself over the phone, decided to be honest when he asked how he was and said he was going through a rough break-up. Apparently Bronson just asked him if he remembered some flood and someone who died in it because they got their foot stuck in a grate. He said he did and Bronson said something like "Well, that wouldn't have happened to me, son. Because I'd have said CUT. IT. OFF. You see, Tom, sometimes you've got to cut a little piece of yourself off in order to grow."

Is Dune any good? I've only seen the Lynch adaptation and I've little to no clue what was supposed to be happening beyond there being giant worms and Sting running around in his pants.

I liked it when I read it. Thought it was great. I was about 12 but I'd probably enjoy it just as much now.

The book is amazing.

The film's amazing too but has very little to do with the book, really, apart from the general theme and aesthetic. Great film to watch stoned.
