Lol at the subterfuge, cheers Ig!

@luka an appraisal - it’s a bit like a more evil version of C Paglia’s position that the counterculture‘s advocacy of psychedelics fried the best minds of her generation. Agreed, the paper illustrates much darker forces were at work. Indisputable re Midnight Climax, but did they succeed? I don’t think so. The genie got out of the bottle. Wasson unintentionally created the opposite of his original intentions. Equally, I’d imagine American military intelligence (and many others) to have been all over mind altering substances since day one. For every good cause there are legacies like Mel Lyman or the Process Church.

A decade earlier (as the Yage Letters prove) Burroughs intuited and elucidates on the full potential of these compounds. He knew (after a full dose) these chemicals could undermine Control, hence Control’s role in attempting to usurp the terrain internally, “by any means”. That a figure like Kesey mistrusted Leary, Owsley describes him as a fool drunk on fame, is only part of the mosaic. I think the knowledge that, being around the Dead could get you seriously dosed, can also be seen as part of a defence mechanism. See their relationship with the HA’s as another form of community defence, which backfired on the group too. Still, even into the mid 70’s Garcia was doing benefit gigs for Angels members. JPB was a lifelong Republican, so who knows on that individual’s front.

But there’s a 3rd way too, that US intel wanted to ferment a veneer of manageable protest that could make the nation appear far more free and civilised to outside agencies and societies. And if you cast that interpretation over today’s culture wars and social media maelstroms, these dark arts are still going strong. Anyway, if you want a laugh at the Dead, just look what their ‘organisation’ has green-lit recently

Good read. He mentions Judee Sill who flirted with Rosicrucians and ended up o.d.ing.

Not too dissimilar from A Scanner Darkly in some regards. I was a gnat's cock's width away from trying to integrate notions of political witchcraft a few posts ago, but couldn't find the language. Best left for another thread.

the book itself is really good. one of the few novel sized pdfs i've read front to back

nuggets like Jim Morrison, (son of a high ranking naval officer who played a big part in sparking the Vietnamese war) just popping out of nowhere with several albums worth of music and lyrics. the stuff about Vito Paulekas with his merry troupe of dancing nubiles starting up the whole 'freak' thing and introducing bohemian/gypsy fashion into the scene. they were the main draw during the early days because so many of the bands (inc. the Doors) were actually shit and could hardly play. Vito's crew had them all mesmerised, dishing out the acid, and then all back to his place after for spliffs and orgies. manson creeping around him, too, natch

oh shit, and i just remembered the bit at the end with Houdini working for the CIA, lol. who better to send on remote ops? the guy would arrive in a new country and be limoed straight to the palace. dab hand with the locks n that innit

the author put loads of it on his blog

Garcia and Hart were army I think, but got discharged. Bob Weir and big Steve allude to the conspiracy talk here a bit but one of them talks all over everyone else aka Otto Mann

i thought wyh might be beagle actually, stil not certain, but if that's the case then i'm happy that it's a much improved incarnation. or was Beagle barty after all?

no beagle wasn't barty. just another facet of the strange, violent, almost supernatural poltergeist like reactions me and him provoked

fav bit with the pig so far

shit when the harp hits the 2 drummer tom-onslaught ouch ouch

jerry on rhythm duties, scything thru, play-fighting the syncop-infinite

his fucking singeing flaming-steel tone on its own is too much...

heavy, loose, but everything winks and glistens

decentred all over body feeling

no accident they played with ornette (much later mind and not so hot really)

it's all around you, it's a mugging, a fucking abduction, it's your new home-in-revolving

no wonder people started following them around

anyway, you can still really hear the acid-test will-to-immerse thing here

Pssst, c'mere, you wanna follow the dead and sell some real acid? A million times more pure than that bunk you're shifting, man? Well, I can help you out brother, but there's one thing you have to do first. You gotta do a thumbprint, man...

What's it like? - It's not possible to describe what it's like. Except maybe DEATH.

What did you see? - ALL

What did you do? - My body did nothing, but lay down. I was no more, just ALL

When I came back from my strongest trip, I'd just seen and been ALL, too. It's a great way to put it.

No other way to put it.

I just inherited a friends music collection, must have at least three-dozen Dead and Garcia solo cds, including a few box sets and "Dick's Picks" multi-cd sets.

Band I know little about but have been brought up to hate on principle like all right-thinking people... I like Hawkwind a lot though despite/because/regardless of their inferior musicianship... but I played em (kinda) to start the radio show last week
