UKG revival (again)

Decent article by Gabriel Szatan on the state of UKG in 2020 (Has he ever posted here? He has got to be a sometime lurker.)

Like A Battle: The Push For UK Garage's Future

Anyone been following any of the labels he mentions? Definitely feels like there's been more new UKG released/re-released in the past 3 years than at any point since 2000.

was wondering if anyone here was going to mention this article!

was also wondering if anyone in this scene was taking the sound any further or doing anything new with it

i see the answer is "no"

that mentasm dub is good fun though

There's an almost philosophic point at stake when these pastiches reach such a level that they're indistinguishable from something that would have come out in 1998. I had this discussion with a friend who was into garage the first time around when I sent him a DJ Q tune which I liked (a Brandy remix I think?) and he was firmly on the "what's the point?" side of the debate.

It's a weird one isn't it, because you could say "why NOT keep making garage/jungle tunes to infinity and beyond, if we're happy enough to play old jungle/garage tunes to infinity and beyond?" but OTOH there's something about it that seems antithetical to what dance music culture (certainly 'ardkrore culture) is all about.

Especially using these sounds like mentasm — it's cool to have reverence for that sound, and the sound itself is eternally effective, but there's something strange about slavishly imitating a style of music that was propelled along by experimentation... Right?

Me too, I was firmly on the "what's the point" side until I found that 2 Bad Mice remix on Spotify: not only did I not know or couldn't tell it wasn't new, when I found that it was I couldn't have cared less. But maybe that was an exception, because it was such a beautiful piece of music.

might it even water down the originals? by eventually putting them on the same plane as the forgeries? can they retain their aura?
