UKG revival (again)

Also, it's great to hear good new dark garage/pre-dubstep. I wish these dark revival tracks were produced in 00s, when I wanted to hear/play them the most:
this is the saving grace of this revival, distancing it from being just a vehicle for 'quirky' and forced-scarcity, overhyped vinyl releases.

A few UK drill producers are having a go at making garage or garage-influenced beats. More interested to see where that goes tbh than a lot of the stuff covered in this thread.

This one by CZR for instance:

Two things.

1. This belongs in the homoerotic cinema club.

2. It's like novelist doing stay with me. Lockdown has promoted giddiness and love.

they had to speed them up to match the energy of the "lively" Sunday afternoon crowd

The way I understood it they thought if they just played the same speed house people were listening to in MOS, they would soon get bored as they'd been listening to it all night, so they sped it up to keep the crowd lively.

Anyway it was a good interview.

yeah I think that's it - a lively crowd still bouncing about and trying to keep their energy sustained through faster, harder, tougher beats and grooves

Listening to the DJ Perception mix for RA and it's really good, none of it feels familiar and yet you can tell it's all from the millennial changeover era.

Listening to Conducta's Kiwi Direkt mix which is full of tasteless remixes and covers and it's even better, the shamelessness of eg a version of Jennifer Paige, feels more in sync with the bootlegs and brazenness of late 90s pirate radio.

ironically that stuff inadvertently led to grime, not something the garage bods anticipated. kids in london were tired of that shit by 2000. Usually the dance/reynoldsian orthodoxy argues the opposite, that going poppy attracts the kids, but the exact opposite happened in London. Which is why I am kind of ideologically (tho not necessarily sonicly) opposed to Condukta, he is generating no negative tension, its pop for pops sake at the end of the day.

and then i can rehabilitate him in 5 years time and say look. without this, you don't have this totally revolutionary art form.

it's also why i have a respect for pianos and chipmunk hardcore, but more faithfully hold the dark stuff up as the pinnacle. necessary growing pains.

might it even water down the originals? by eventually putting them on the same plane as the forgeries? can they retain their aura?

If they water down the originals then the originals weren't that great to begin with. Luckily this has not happened to me with any of these tunes.

Also, it's very on-brand of Szatan to shoehorn identity politics into his piece yet completely fail to engage seriously with the class element which seems to be the real root of some of the frictions he describes between the different camps.

I dunno about Sammy Virgi and condukta and them lot, i dunno if they are hipster opportunists reviving the most poppiest garage for the sake of it (i haven't paid enough attention) but one of the djs affiliated with the enchanted rhythms lot in berlin set up a climate catastrophe awareness thing in the club scene yet also goes to mexico for three-four months a year because Europe is too stressful, lulz. i just remember one of my mates showed me end of last year and came to write it here. Political tourism amirite.

Also I have a mix bookmarked from Eliza rose with 'Man like Morgan' - come on, try harder lads!

Szatan's article also alludes to the uptake of certain tracks by the Minimal Techno scene - if UKG is to ever break free from it's own mythology, I expect it will be via that scene's championing of it.

I doubt it. Nikolas Lutze is basically dj preciously guarded showpiece. I don't mind the guy but the culture he has fostered is absolutely rotten to the core. go make your own music rather than jacking up some end recording tech house tune from 1997 to £100.
