Beast of Burden
It has white cliffs and it's where the ferries go from. What more do you want to know?

I want to know what it's like. The town. I live on the road to Dover. David Copperfield walks it to find his aunt, Betsey Trotwood.

I mean, the white cliffs are a national symbol and the Kent countryside more widely is central to the English imagination, part of the ideal image of its landscape and old way of life as well as national redemption in the Battle of Britain.

that's why it's mysterious though.
Certainly passing through places have a special strangeness. Like Las Vegas - always surprised when I was a child and it said Andre Agassi came from Vegas and I (subconsciously) thought "Was he born in a hotel? Grew up in a casino?".
Everyone always has to hurry down from Dover....

Sesimbra... it's kind of just a shell but the views are wicked. Liza went to loads of castles when she was in France and now she's got a thing for them. I think French castles are better as a rule, certainly better maintained. Most of the ones here that I know of were bought by the Moors during the occupation so they are really old (though often later occupied and renovated)

Probably should have a castles thread.... the famous palace/castle thing in Sintra is one of the maddest buildings I know - honorable second after St Basils Cathedral in Moscow probably.
