I think his dad was probably every schoolboy’s nightmare, head of Rugby school and quite the Eminent Victorian.

The poem was supposedly written on his honeymoon - I can imagine his wife lying in bed waiting to be deflowered while Arnold is staring out to sea muttering something about the armies of the night. Welcome to married life!
Didn't Ian McEwan write a novel about this?

It was called Dover Beach and it was all about impotence.

I read it but I can't remember anything about it.

Chesil Beach I think. Like you, I have read it and have no memory of it whatsoever.

in On Chesil Beach it's the woman who is "frigid" and the man suffers premature ejaculation rather than impotence, but it's not a great leap to make parallels is it

Unless this is a joke that I don't get, the book is called Chesil Beach.... I haven't read it but I remember everything about it.
