I kind of think Flaming Lips & Mercury Rev around the turn of the millenium have something to with it. Those high voices. Maybe not poppy enough though

Junior boys! I'd forgot about them. I remember they got discussed a lot on the blogs at the time. Not that similar to the songs in the OG post though

That MGMT has a bit of prince about it. Good tune, I'm willing to bet their only good one though, not that ive knowingly heard any others

Not sure offensive sexist lyrics or macho rock riffage have ever put off women.

It does appeal to a more delicate sensibility though. The rise of this sound corresponded with 'hipster' entering the vernacular

Since when was indie a hotbed of sexist lyrics and machismo?!

Unless indie has a different definition I'm unaware of.

I'd say that this stuff has a lot to do with the internet making pop music acceptable in the 00s.

Yes those adverts where it's like softly lit late afternoon, smiley people wearing natural fibres having fun in an unidentifiable modern city as the sun goes down. Lots of that about.
this is what we are supposed to aspire to at the moment. it's the ideal we strive towards.
