they have more than enough self-awareness to know they can't occupy the rapper role in exactly the same way as an african american occupies it, and the ways they adapt to that, is what this stuff is all about. i think corpsey was saying something similar in relation to the role humour plays here.

how do you play the role of a white british rapper, particularly if you're from a dull, provincial background? a paste person destined for one of lifes bit parts

yeah this is the credulity gap i was on about. And if like we're saying there's less ability to trade on sex (because they aren't sexy) or violence (because they can't fight) they must amp up the hedonism, the headiness, the conscious... I AM MENTAL ME

when sex is mentioned it's like Viz sex. burying your head in some big fat tits, slappers and slags, fingering behind the chip shop, getting an STD

i keep wanting to talk about the triumph of High Focus becasue there's no distance between audience and artists, they're exactly the same, and they are the people that aren't suppposed to matter. it's paste people who have ignored their paste status and built a scene that caters only to them. and that's a good example and inspiration to us becasue dissensus is also built of paste people. there's lessons to be learned.

Danny are you about to damage our relationship by comparing High Focus records with Jeremy Corbyn's Labour leadership?
I am almost tempted to make an infographic comparing the two. The only thing stopping me is I don't want to become that invested in the idea for reasons of personal shame ("how did you spend the holidays Dan?"). The most striking analogy is the popularity in Brighton and Bristol. Think about it.

I think absolutely that you can connect drill and austerity. Not joking anymore.

no one has been allowed to publish any writing about drill that isn't about this connection. you can talk about it in terms of closing the youth clubs but it's forbidden to discuss it as music

the paste demographic. this is my new area of study and specialisation. encompasses the bulk of the working and middle classes. the bit part actors. k-punk's reflexive impotence demographic. that's the consituency we are going to harness for our rise to power. that's the key to the whole country. high focus are the crucial clue.

they're occupying a role that we know is structurally forbidden to them but also that we have forbidden to ourselves. they've broken all the rules. they're free of the matrix!

real rap we know is supposed to be the province of the criminalised and mostly immigrant underclasss, a demographic britain has been working hard to create over the last 30 years
