What is the difference between Art Deco and International Moderne?

When I google art moderne I get pictures like this which I would have always thought of as art deco.

Incidentally I really like this building in our little town - incongruous in a way although there are quite a few touches of this stuff every now and then in Portugal. The door of our block of flats kinda nods to it too in fact.

That one looks like someone turned a cruise ship into a building.

there were some nice apartment blocks built alongide the Thames about 20 years like this. now any pretence at making a nice building is gone its all ugly corporate dystopia now.

there was some responsible and ambitious stuff 20 years ago. there was some actual optimism and respect for the public.

Yeah it really does, I say that every time I see it - I think that's not uncommon with art deco. Reminds me of places in, I dunno, Folkestone or Leigh-on-Sea or something looking over the sea, I always imagine that the guys who live in those are old ships captains or something who have retired to a pseudo-boat by the coast and have one of those old brass telescopes on their balcony looking out to sea.
That one looks like it should be a great place to live anyway with those little turrets and stuff and presumably roof gardens. No sea view but I think you should have a view over the Tagus from up there and it's about 20k across at this point so it should do the job.

There is a hotel in Folkestone that is obviously modelled on an ocean liner. Building is quite interesting although inside it's basic to say the least. We stayed there once and it's like a tenner with breakfast included - one of those buffets we discussed before with rock hard scrambled egg etc not complaining at all though at the price we paid.

i dont know what the popular understanding is
I mean whatever the common ideas of it are - like my understanding, which is vague and low resolution. "Popular" probably wasn't the word for it, think "common" is better. I was just wondering how much the passing/pedestrian understanding, such as mine, keeps intact the message/intention of the modernists. I mean, I hear "modernist architecture" and I think Bauhaus, so I'm probably a bit above average there, but not much. Still low resolution in the grand scheme, which is my point.

Not a huge point, but one that interests me more if we generalize it. That is, how the common/dull understanding of a topic relates to an expert/sharp understanding. Does the former miss the mark, or does it just hit it less robustly? Just interested in mapping how these things develop.

i agree this is an interesting question.

Let's Talk About Ceps
This is kinda what I thought... but if you look it up its the other way round. Art deco started in France and Arte Moderne in the US.

To be honest this is going beyond the little I know about the subject, but is "Art Moderne" the same thing as international modern[e/ism]?

I just looked up "international modernism" on Wikipedia and it took me to a page titled "International Style", with loads of examples from both North America (Canada as well as the USA) and Western Europe, mainly Germany, France and the Netherlands, plus a surprising number from Israel but dating from when it was still Mandatory Palestine (on account of Jewish architects going there, as well as the USA and USSR, from Europe in the 30s).

So, the short answer is: I dunno.

Well Miami is the world's most art deco city like I said above... although that picture I took is in Santa Iria de Azoia.

Probably not. As I said above I totally messed up the title to this thread and thus the whole thread I guess.
