I recognise that one from Owen Hatherley's "Nasty, Brutalist and Short" blog (no idea if it's still up).

That was the blog that introduced me to the idea of "Blair hats", i.e. the gratuitous and generally hideous pagoda-like roofs, which are thick, brightly coloured and protrude over the edge of buildings, and which were de rigeur on all sorts of buildings - supermarkets sometimes, but more often public buildings like schools and hospitals, flat blocks too - for a few years either side of 2000, hence the name.

There are some particularly egregious versions visible from the station at Reading, which I think might be Owen H's home town:

Quietly despise the way these vultures have taken over certain pubs, not that pubs are remotely untouchable or healthy places, just the drip drip of community erosion. My Dad would be properly peeved at one or two drinking holes that are now brand local/express, counters and shelves, no chance of some poor soul spilling his pint etc.

there are similar supermarket buildings here. and we've had a few gunmen in them, but more on college campuses than shopping areas.

whenever I hear or read the word clocktower, I envision a high-powered sniper rifle coming out one of the windows.
