Am not sure if those guys actually Started this J craze @ YT - but i seem to remember some types on the Left Coast got into 'Japan' and set about trotting out every single Hosono , Midori and cat guy Shimizu into one grouping.

Is Drive more or less ground zero for this stuff? Everything has a precedent, but that feels like the jump off point for the pink-purple neon, synthwave, driving alone thing.

Definitely. Drive didn't start it - like you say - but it made that aesthetic huge. It's all there too - totally alienated hero AND synthwave AND cars.
