A vision of the night most Windows don't offer. The distant skyscrapers with the winking warning lights for aircraft. The map of lights fixed and lights smeared with movement and speed. Everything we can't enter because we are on the other side of the glass. The relation we have to a)outside window and b)outside screen

I think it could become a crutch and a weight if one were to just sit listening to the stuff night after night, but I imagine it's a mood thing for most people and they aren't doing that.

pivoting slightly here, but anytime I go into what you could call a normie bar, the music is always depressing. Young professionals, careerists, your standard social 20 somethings can only enjoy melancholy tunes.

I think it's cathartic for people. It's too strong a mood to be listened to at all times. I can't imagine it being listened to at any point other than either being alone on a laptop at night or traveling at night. Same sort of vibe as Burial and the late-night city aesthetic stuff Luka mentioned.

The comments are interesting because you've got a bunch of isolated people listening to isolating music with isolating artwork all agreeing with each other on how isolated they are. It's like a party where everyone's stood inside those giant inflatable balls, so they're all together but not quite.

I don't know what is normie in your part of the world. In London one thing I find interesting, I've mentioned it before, is that normie bars have an established soundtrack, a hip playlist which was codified in the 90s even though the people ostensibly playing it grew up in the 00s. The Smiths and Fela Kuti Tango in the Night, The Cure

Is Drive more or less ground zero for this stuff? Everything has a precedent, but that feels like the jump off point for the pink-purple neon, synthwave, driving alone thing.

we have those bars your describing too. But I was talking about those aesthetically ambiguous normie spots that play almost exclusively post malone and post malone adjacent stuff. Sad white boy crooning over melancholy chill wave trap beats. Even if thats your thing, its still miserable stuff. Its not party music, its not something to casually listen to with friends, but its fucking everywhere in normie circles. ubiquitous across all occasions. Ive joked that if you hop in an uber and post malone isnt playing youre going to wake up in a bath tub with a kidney missing.

Xanax music.

London still revolves round coke and weed and ket and hasn't quite succumbed to the prescription racket yet. That's my guess. Might be wrong.

There was an influx of the stuff in Britain, but I don't think it's had the same effect as in the US. You can't get it as easily over here.
