THE NANNY STATE

still, a college degree for a number of professions is like a union card for actors: you can't get considered for a position without it. particularly at bog companies, HR people will always play it safe, and in many white collar fields it's too much of a risk to hire someone without a degree instead of one of the thousands of other candidates who do have one.

that's changed to some degree (ahem) due to the tech world, where plenty of smart guys dropped out of college because they were gifted developers and could start their own companies.

I had a thought about disciplining being either patriarchal or matriarchal, the former asserting "you aren't rough enough" and the latter asserting "you are too rough". That is, the former punishes meekness and rewards dominance and the latter vice versa? Is there anything to this? The former would entail/reward imperial and individualistic behavior, while the latter entails/rewards personal compromise and communal behavior.

Granted this buys heavily into conventional gender codes. But as a thought experiment, it could be interesting. The father scolds you for being too weak, the mother scolds you for being too rough. In tandem, they temper you into some kind of equilibrium beyond the scope of either of them.

This is why McKenna says we need to return to feminine societies and away from the patriarchal dominator society that's been shredding the world for so long.
