r&b is probably the only genre where young black women are encouraged and allowed to flourish and yet it's probably the most critically neglected genre in 2020. We all love the classics but people like K Michelle, Sevyn Streeter, Teyana Taylor etc who would have been huge stars in the early noughties are now peripheral figures in the pop landscape. Black Lives Matter but let's not consume their work.

Britain realised it couldn't compete and turned away from trying to. They gave us Beyonce and we gave them Jamelia, but the US could never do Girls Aloud or Sugababes or East 17 or Rachel Stevens.
