Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum he was summoned up from hell
Booted down a spell
By a square-dancin' farmer
By a square-dancin' farmer, well

That old bum was sticking out his thumb
When the farmer drew up and said
"Listen son", and the horse compared his hooves
"If you fall in my circle again I'll tan your red hide
And dance you on your tail, and pitch you from now to now
Pitch you from now to now"

I got freak out the mothers on tape when iwas a teenager and it was fairly amusing but it never made me want to listen to any more zappa. Basically sounded like a joke novelty thing to me, but maybe nows the time to get into him

just like the voice and how it gets increasingly more surreal but then also quite poignant in the lyrics. and i like how so much is generated acapella. i like acapellas generally.

i love that voice, don't think he's being 'weird'. it's taking on a grizzly character. but strangely, i don't really like much else captain beefheart, just that one tune. if you know anything else like it, i'd like to hear it.

exactly. and it’s not like its just a hipster thing, if you listen to early american folk and blues recordings the voices really are that weird, or in some cases weirder.
it's got that leadbelly vibe to it deffo - i love that leadbelly version of 'where did you sleep last night'.

there's also a great odetta tune, bald headed woman, where the liner notes said 'accompanying herself on the hands' for the claps

same vibe even though they are different colours. it's possible and sometimes happens. like jungle when you thought nicky blackmarket had to be black but he wasn't.
