I shared your post with an older mate wyh, who was in Sheff around same time as DiY were active. He said:

Smokescreen, the sound system I was vaguely involved with at the start kind of migrated to Nottingham and became entwined with diy. They put on a bunch of great parties and were much less macho than the other big systems and played good music! Seemed to burn out quick though and just do a bunch of club nights. From the outside there were a lot of hangers on that seemed like egotistical arse holes. Some of them built studios and I think were pretty helpful to other people in learning and lending skills and equipment. They were punks who played disco so the story goes and were welcoming to all. Fluffy vibe at the few early parties I went too. Quite a few of them came unstuck with the drugs I think.

For me I went to a few parties and raves in maybe 89/90 and started putting on a few parties with mates in 91/92 as Smokescreen. Can remember going to a DIY solstice party, probably in 91. I left the country after Castle Morton and Smokescreen grew and became a more organised crew. And more involved with DIY. I came back to UK in '94 I think and I did go to free parties quite a bit until 97. It was a good laugh but they were different by then. Criminal Justice Bill, Ketamine, Oblivion. Still a good laugh but it didn't seem revolutionary really. It really felt like being part of a change in consciousness for me at the beginning - it was fucking amazing. Meeting people every week who had completely changed their world view. Everyone was so friendly and you'd meet people from all walks of life that you never would've met a year or so ago. It really felt like things were changing. And they were, they did - but only to an extent. It changed a lot of people forever (for good and for bad), changed youth culture and music culture and has had a lasting legacy in the same way as punk. There are still communities around those times. But it never changed mainstream society. And it was naive to think it could because it was just based around getting off your head and dancing to silly sounds. Hard work changing structures and inherent behaviour I think and I'm not sure it can ever work if it's based on drugs. Or at least in needs to transcend drugs.

The thing about free parties is that they are temporary autonomous zones which is a pretty radical thing and plants seeds which can grow into movements. But they can also grow into mental health issues, addiction and superstar dj culture

the problem with changing your consciousness as anyone who has ever tried to go into a shit job the morning after tripping and gaining complete enlightenement will know is that the world around you doesnt change and you can't change it so most end up either self-destructing or becoming increasingly cynical/delusional, depending on taste

it leaves you in a very difficult, over-exposed, vulnerable position, out of sync with the world around you.

Bizarre Inc - You Took My Love, another heavy face melting dove record, apply sparingly. Images of buses parked up, bedlam, trying to get home alive. Not what you might expect from BI's quite commercial (and corny) repertoire

That Took My Love tune is great, proper 1993 spatious house with a heavy bassline, what guerilla wishes they could be.

I do like the corny and commercial stuff from BI, very surreal kitchen sink hooligan situationism. Impossible to get a chart listener of today to recognise it as legitimate music, but then again, that's what a lot of that stuff was about. Churn em out like a factory.

This one tucked away on the b-side of playing with knives is a proper 91 psychotic UK/Belgian brutalist mindfuck, and then when they've had enough with the head bashing they go into an almost Carl Craig-esque emotional bomb to finish the tune, incredible really.

Love that opening pad at the beginning as well, if only trance sounded this good.

But this is exactly why I defend hard techno. anti-social surrealist tripping. More power rangers than Tim Leary, who in all honesty has probably fucked up a lot of peoples mental health, even if he had good ideas and did not intend to. In those sorts of positions one has to be pretty fastidious with what one puts out to the world. Not cos of elitism per se but because of the ready steady cook nature of popular culture.

But it's not about social realism at all, leave that to the goths.

Transcendence is a Myth and drugs are definitely not the solution for everyone, but consciousness can be raised and lowered.

Like when I was hanging out with these manny kids a while back, they were all coming out of mephedrine addictions and they are only 17. What a horrid drug.

The change from acid and ecstasy to ketamine is a big move isn't it.
In theory but I think tranqs have always been in, yeah, (eg luuds) and psychedelics are more popular/mainstream than ever. The idea of an "acid generation" seems more to do with novelty, news cycles, and countercultural association than actual popularity of psychedelics in the 60s vs now
