Surrender to sodomy Oliver! Emma Bunton (born 1976), singer, member of the Spice Girls, was born in Finchley.

No offence, but you're a rogue European asshole. :p - I mean your name on here is Padraig! I'm the real non-euro on here, no matter how hard Turkey tries, we'll never be part of what is accepted as Europe or the European union. Irish are massive europhiles.

Also is it really worse than gangsta rap exploiting the projects for multimillionaires, given we can all admit its cringe.

It's strange how Americans get protective over house but won't offer the same courtesy to hip hop.
no offense to you boss but you have badly missed the point here

I picked a dumb username 11 years ago with little if any forethought. I haven't concocted a fake Irish persona that I spent years trying to commercially exploit until I was called out on it. I don't list my location as North Dublin (or Skibereen or Loughrea or etc).

it's not only about race - this guy would barely stand out in European dance music's long sketchy history with American racial contexts - and it's not about "house" or "Chicago house" - plenty of Euro dudes make lame Chicago pastiche records, who cares. it's about Chicago and Cabrini-Green.

(the social construct of race is ontologically prior to his/general techno exploitation of it btw, but whatever, sideline argument)

this dipshit was actively exploiting a massive symbol of Chicago's (and the country's, as my prior post makes clear) ugly racial history - the symbol of segregation, redlining, ghettoization - for his lame Chicago pastiche records. hell no, he doesn't get to just get away with that. most of the stick he got was more generic liberal outrage, I'm sure, but yunno what I ain't gonna shed any tears for him, the opprobrium was well earned.

and who cares that he's a "wicked techno DJ"? this isn't about music, and that's also like the dumbest possible reason to defend someone

it's done and dusted, we've all moved on, the world has bigger problems, who cares, etc, but I expect better from you

again i'm not defending his lame house direction. He was a wicked techno dj before this alias, but that's by the by to a defence. Just noting that most of the people who got outraged were mostly white people, people who inadvertently benefit from US racial segregation. Being aware of your borders does not make abolition, it just makes you moralistic. Till I see white people taking the 'abolish da po-leece' shit they spout seriously I reserve judgment to be jaded. And if you actually believe that abolishing the police is unrealistic, at least have the guts to come out with that publically and just be honest and admit that you don't have a solution to the racial inequity built into the American state. I'm not talking just about old bill here but the policing of Americas Black and Brown populations, which Cabrini Green undoubtedly was.

At no point have i said that Mark should have gotten away with naming a record Cabrini Green, but don't pretend you're not a European asshole settler. That's all. A lot of Americans like to pretend they are not rogue Europeans as a neat deflection trick and I don't buy it. It's easy to rant when you don't implicate yourself, we can all do it.

And here is the cruel irony, someone like Mark being a dickhead has probably done more for chicago/detroit than the people who are outraged, who are not even respected in the house/techno communities. Does it make it right? Of course it doesn't! These people couldn't even go to detroit because they would be scared of being found out, muh urban, muh dangerous areas where i could get shot. Don't falsely impute a position to me that I don't subscribe to. I didn't approve of that name and still don't. I just know that US culture (and to a lesser extent UK) is premised on exploiting poverty and racial segregation. You know this. We've discussed this many times on here.

I expected better of you (what is this, some 19th century civilise the moorish heathens missionary redemption shit? At least understand the point I'm making first rather than hold me up to misplaced standards of the virtuous) rather than jumping the gun. someone similar also did this when bay b kane come out with some weed rabithole conspiracy shit. they were like 'oh his music never meant much to me' as some kind of absolution. You weren't saying that before he was found out were you though!

FOH associating me with any "and co." btw

Come on now. I'm sure I could go through your record collection and find some horrible, racist, misogynist, homophobic people in there.

Saying x is a wicked techno dj does not mean that their actions off the decks are beyond criticism! Far from it. I'm just stating why I like(ed) them. I'm not going to pretend they didn't exist just to score points. I don't know mh, they aren't my friend, if they are a dickhead I'm not afraid to say it publically, which they were in that instance. Don't overproject onto me mate, it's not a good look. Condescension will never be welcome in London.

Lads, think you could move your "left-wing rich kids do Techno in London" squabbles elsewhere and leave Version's brilliant thread about Danny boy and the Netherlands alone. Please?

Mark actually grew up on a council estate. Not sure if stating that fact comes across as defence, so I'll leave that there.

Mark is wicked (one of the best techno djs ever) and honestly most people getting offended at Marquis Hawkes were white liberals (not all but most) looking for absolution. I begin to get tired of these libs because they spend so much time obsessing over race as ontologically prior that it makes them actively racist after a point. They build borders, then think acknowledging that they've built the border means they can call it progress.

Still wouldn't pick Marquis Hawkes as a name though, cos it sounds dorky but hey.

@WashYourHands evidently he was a fan of Kenny Hawkes!

But yes, I agree with you, his house has never been my bag and if he appropriated anything it was house. But I'm not going to deny the influence his techno sets had on me. Sure there are problematic people padraig and co. really musically obsess/admire from the chicago orbit. I get miphed by people who try and conduct politics on the cultural ground. Ironically that is what Douglas P does.

I can see how the construction of that first sentence come across as a defence. I just mean he's wicked on the decks, bad ass - that is what wicked means in london, not a virtue of any kind. We can't exactly say 'bad arse' can we! Or was, before he moved to berlin and lost the plot. But seriously man, take some time out.
