Fight Club
definitely, nice one. a different conception of masculine perfection - chiseled rather than steroid swollen - but very much lingering erotic gaze

even has the classic element of the female love interest who's obviously secondary to the main homoerotic relationship

Does Cruising count?
absolutely it counts. it's a gaysploitation extension of the direct homoeroticism pioneered by underground queer filmmakers.

which is what makes it both great and problematic

it's very much a straight take, for straight audiences, on one particular element of queer culture

but I mean it references Mapplethorpe, it's definitely in

might as well just include every film ever with two mates in it! it's got a gay character whos always trying to bum them senseless and theyre always trying to run away! Its an anti gay film!

I get that vibe from Thelma & Louise, but I haven't actually seen it. Sam and Frodo in LOTR. Altman's M.A.S.H.

@version none of those really strike me as particularly homoerotic

I guess you could read Thelma + Louise as queer coding on a deep level but seems v 2020 retrospect

the standard reading of a feminist take/inversion of yr typical buddy road movie seems much more the point

Sam + Frodo - I mean there's tenderness, but no sexual tension. (and there's no way Sam isn't 100% straight)

the M.A.S.H. are coded straight in the way virtually all 70s leading men are. there's maybe an unusual depth of friendship, not erotic tho.

not to belabor the obvious but for homoeroticism you have to both elements

they can be deeply submerged and ambiguous

something like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - that love triangle focused on Etta Place, with their unresolved feelings for each other

idk if I'd call it homoerotic but both of the potential elements are there, you can read a submerged queer element into it

but like Philadelphia I wouldn't call homoerotic

a gay film very much, and it depicts affection for sure, but there isn't any eroticism

The Warriors, all those ripped young dudes shirtless under their vests, stalking thru NY like the Greek warriors they were based on

American Psycho comes to mind, but Bateman almost seems to desire himself more than anyone else. That sex scene where he's watching himself flexing in the mirror.

I also like how point break stars Anthony keidis from red hot chilli peppers as a baddie. That whole crew know how to have a good time.
