where are people with paranoia and conspiracy formation these days? any dark suspicions that won't go away? be honest. i don't mean you're sucummbing to them, just that sometimes they occur to you, that this might all be a trap, and you get a shiver up your spine, before dismissing it

it seems like there's still a fair amount of uncertainty about the long term effects, medically as well as socially

So the scope is wide, speculation is pretty scary though and also maybe a bit tasteless? maybe some taboos to test. especially around death?

Patricia Lockwood is embracing our next evolutionary step towards zombi-ism. Can covid fulfil this yearning that we seem to have for everything to turn into a 1st person shooter? What if there are effects on fertility, or hereditary effects? There's no way we can know about that stuff

I don't want to be alarmist, but it's possible that no vaccine will be found, or the vaccine itself might be toxic or have its own side-effects, especially if it's developed in a hurry,

and in the absence of the vaccine the social effects

our accelerated dematerialisation depending on this elaborate scaffolding of cables, pixels, nodes, software stacks all cobbled together, devoted to our little personal altars,

well, most people won't die. we might but life will go on. tbh what will be ushered in under the cover of the virus is far more dangerous for humanity as a whole than the virus itself which will just wipe some of us out.

The weforum great undoing website is like a horrifying parody, more shocking in so many ways than scifi :(

Off topic, but the opening line of Patricia Lockwood's thing for LRB on Updike is gold,

I was hired as an assassin. You don’t bring in a 37-year-old woman to review John Updike in the year of our Lord 2019 unless you’re hoping to see blood on the ceiling.

How much of The Great Reset's being forced by the pandemic and how much is a case of it simply presenting the opportunity to change things? Is the distinction important?

the future is all up in the air (not to even mention our uncertainties about the present), and there is a lot of time on people's hands, so we should be coming up with some speculative futures
The clock was set at two minutes to midnight in January 2018, and left unchanged in 2019 due to the twin threats of nuclear weapons and the increasing effects of global warming.[4] On January 23, 2020, it was moved forward to 100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) before midnight, based on the increased threats to global stability posed by "a nuclear blunder", exacerbated by the rate of climate change.[5]

a lot of serious thinkers would say the Great Reset was waiting for the pandemic in the way the neoconservatives were waiting for 9/11.

How many businesses are about to go down?

lots. not everything can be ordered online, and I'd imagine many companies (aside from the giants) are unable to transform their business to online fast enough or in the way that they will be profitable.

Feels like one of the only things left to be done as a statement en masse which doesn't just cause more violence. Also kind of hard to corrupt it via infiltration
