version has often described how his relationship with music is perfectly postmodern. There is no social or historical context. There is nothing beyond the more or less interesting and pleasant bleeps, boinks, squeaks and squelches. It doesn't participate in society. It's not a force in the world. It's just noises you might like or quite like.

Music was the last major art form to collapse into postmodernity. Matthew Ingram worked out that it happens at the precise moment grime artists stop bothering with dubplates and vinyl releases. So probably about halfway through the '00s.

It's worth reading that Jameson book on postmodernism. It's an eye opener. Everything we assume to be an effect of the Internet was already present and had been identified. the tendency to pastiche and so on. The Internet just accelerated it. I mentioned it to Reynolds and he said yeah retromania is really just the classical tenets of postmodernism applied to the present pop moment.

You remove these sounds and these structures from their social context and you place them behind glass to be considered

Your museum glass is my screen. How do we smash?

What if I read that book and become as fatalistic as you lot?

I'm not fatalistic and I'm not cynical, sometimes I'm not even pessimistic. Depends if I've got a hangover or not.

As to how we break the glass, we use psychedelics to create our own religion, with genuine miracles and revelations attesting to its truth and worth and we use the exploratory and experimental modes of avant garde art to explore and alter the reality field imbued with a definite and exhilarating sense of mission. Real pioneers with real dangers and real rewards. Out at the edge of the thing.

Yeah, I mean I'm aware of the social and historical context of stuff, but it isn't something that carries much weight for me. It's a product of receiving the bulk of my musical education through the internet. Everything's flattened and capable of being plugged into everything else. One big buffet where you just grab whatever takes your fancy.

You can rearrange albums as you see fit, delete all but one or two tracks, stick tracks in other albums, shuffle. It's turned all music into a single playlist.

there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm glad I lived through a different reality. one's not better or worse, just different.

What people typically say about the sixties is that the music was, maybe not a sideshow exactly, but an adjunct to the main business of personal and social transformation and a kind of coming to self awareness and self expression of a generation.

Music being part of that process and drawing meaning from it, becoming imbued with meaning and significance, given an aura and force as a result which it otherwise could never have had. Because music as music has no intrinsic worth. We have to invest it with meaning, we have to infuse it with our life-force and desire. If not it remains completely inert.

You don't mean that. One is clearly worse which is why everyone is screaming in pain and anxiety.

one is worse to me, yes, but not to others. the world doesn't begin and end with my -- or your -- world view.

back to boredom: working on a list of boring records. not unoriginal, bland mind you, just not "engaging" :

I guess what I am really looking for Ambient w/ a large "A". Lots of ambient records are too pretty, too melancholic (Basinski), too human.

Basinski is shit and probably made up the back story to the disintegration tapes

For people of my age and older this is dystopian and terrifying of course, but that's where we've all ended up and that's why I believe we must cancel music.

no he's just white. like yes, i like a bit of happy hardcore, but do you think, as someone who was called 'terrorist' and 'wog' by white kids in secondary school after 9/11, i can stomach 8 hours of craig and tina jumping around like prepubescent kids? have a word with yourself.
