your generation got co-opted by Mondeo man. music was much more international for us in the developing world before it was for you guys, because you had a powerful anglo-american music market. our knock off markets in the middle east could never even begin to compete, not even with Jamaica.

there's an ocean of turkish music in the 60s-70s. It figures virtually nil in the consciousness of todays turkish kids. they are more likely to namecheck the beatles, Judas Priest or rolling stones. But it's not as if Erkin Koray wasn't revolutionary. Sometimes bliss can surrender to the market a bit too heavily - it deserved to get popular. That's rarely how music works outside of England and America.

it's more that piracy has been the default mode of consumption for decades in the developing world. before the internet there were cassettes. in the west tapes were always a bit faddish and people couldn't wait to get rid of them. in the East they lasted well into the early 2010s as a popular mode of consumption. raks in Turkey still pumps em out like crazy.

hip hop and hardcore in the west were the true inheritors of cassette culture. Not through sheer distribution alone but the cutup nature of both styles.

Capitalism can find ways to zap your neurons and distract you for a while but it can't satisfy you. It can turn your attention away from your boredom but it can't cure it

Barty's right about this with regards to techno. the same 1 beat supremacy being pounded into your skull over and over again as the ultimate form of stimulation. `In that regard it's a particularly non-committal product.

Here is also your heart.

Surprised Muggs doesn't big up this record more given that if you wanted to claim the IDM bods were proto UKG in 92 there's no finer example.
