What do you wish you'd done differently in life? What are you glad to have done?

Very high prevalence of pedophilia. Also known as 'the satanic capital of America.'

I love this picture of America from afar. Everyone I've met in Wisonsin's the most earnest, well-meaning farmer type I've ever met

I take it as the bohemian/traditional split Luka was on about. Gotta figure out which one is right for you.

Well that's what this thread is about, yeah? There are three paths: full trad-dad, chickens in the coop; neoliberal climber; boheme dropout

can always rely on Leo to sober me up

I get you, but my ma and da were more accepting of their lot, fewer options, less aspiration, more restricted materially and experientially. you know what im talking about

yeah, I get it, but these are super broad generalizations. technology now opens doors that didn't exist in the past, for sure. but there were always entrepreneurs and innovators who came from all walks of life, as well as people who accepted their lots in life. my dad was born in 1920 into a pretty poor farming family of immigrants, worked his way up to a management position, owned a decent house, raised a family and traveled the world. that's certainly not a miracle, but it's lightyears beyond what he or my grandparents ever thought would happen when he was young.

maybe it's a US/UK disconnect. classism exists here, but it's also the land of opportunity where many people try to make their own future.

I think the neoliberal climber has consumed the dad-trad route. The only dad-trads I know are miserable people stuck in their home tow. they are outside the social field

Oh shit excuse me I thought neo liberal-climber was in reference to young professional types who have healthy hobbies like rock climbing.

i do think these costumes are stepped into with gusto in the US, worn more proudly. it's something to do with more space and a more earnest relationship with mass media

I dont know what I want, thats why I asked! Were on this pretty niche forum here, you get my general feel. Were all high minded tortured aesthetes here.

Aight I'll give it my best shot then my lunch break's over and I gotta get back to work.

New York has large design, fashion, and visual art scenes. With the exception of design, which is undergoing a UX renaissance, they're all decadent and in strange perverse late stages of neoliberalism. Probably not worth being around for the most part. Maybe once a year I catch a show I'm glad to be at.

The museums are solid, but there are good museums in DC, in CDMX, in much of Europe. I try to go to the Met semi-regularly, and to the Ruben — their collection of Asian art is really wonderful. Sometimes MoMA is worth it.

There are some good theaters for catching avant films: FilmForum, IFC, Lincoln, etc all have a ton of rewinds, midnight showings of Holy Mountain, Bergman marathons, etc.

The music scene... well. It has some highlights, no doubt it's healthier than other realms. Union Pool is still going hard as a countercultural institution with rampant bathroom sex. All the mini venues I came up with are shut down, were shut down pre-Covid, cuz of real estate... RIP Palisades, 285 Kent, Glasslands, Death By Audio, Shea Stadium 2... The scene's mostly garage rock and synthpop; I'm sure other non-white, non-hipster communities are doing more interesting stuff.

I've met good people here, but always through networks. Going to a random bar... well, plenty of fuckheads. Maybe you get lucky. Usually its friends of friends, via dinner parties, rooftop gatherings, summer BBQs.

You can pick up a room for $800-1200 in Brooklyn, or a studio for $2000-3000, in Brooklyn. Add 50% if you're wanting Manhattan. Most professional incomes for people our age are between 30-100k. 50 or 60 is pretty typical for a good job not requiring extensive experience/technical skill, e.g. consulting or PR or admin work or something.

hahaha I do seem to have a lot of rock climbing friends. something about solving complex body problems and getting in physical activity and also feeling "rugged" getting callouses on yr hands etc, I can't blame it

but no, neoliberal climbing to me looks like my friend A. starting at financial interships at 19, climbing through various hedgefunds/downtown banks, working 90hr weeks, having no life outside work, etc. Some people fill this void through law/medical school

my "trad dad" friends are the types who, by their late 20s, were burnt out of climbing and/or had gotten their shit sufficiently together from bohemia. put down a mortgage on some rural Mass, property, started building a family. chicken coops, big properties, mini farms, self-sufficiency ideals. all this has been helped by the pandemic ofc

I have a partner so that help, but its very hard to give up living without roommates for 1000-1200 month, split. I'm trying to live out my twenties in a metro hub, and its hard to shake the feeling that if one wants to live in a city, it makes no sense to live any where but the city, however impractical. I haven't been to LA, but with regards to every other major US city, NYC delivers that city-ness quality in its own echelon.

Rent has plummeted, and vaccines are a couple months out

If you want to experience the city on a 25% discount, now is your time

It wouldn't be outta the realm of possibility to find a studio in the 1700/1800 area, if you were good about looking, and were willing to a hit on some other things

Americans are more comfortable in the stock personality they've chosen, happy to be cartoons

We're Europeans. We're posthumous. We can't occupy our own lives. We just watch them drift by with a sense of irony and distance. They're not split in the way we are.

Correct that — I just checked up, there are listings for 12-1500 in Brooklyn.

EDIT: These prices are so insane. There are $1200 studios in West Village. I never seen anything like it in my goddam lyfe.
