flash crash

right it was mentioned in a thread on here, can't remember which, that most finance trades are done in microseconds by computers and that could cause a crash faster than humans can control it, which is called a "flash crash". all that is true. i spoke to a finance consultant today about it and he said that there are safeguards in place, but even if they don't work it's not a major crash. it just means that a few rich people get a bit less rich, not that there won't be any food in the supermarket.

he also said a completely cash-free world is 200 years away

just some good news for the board for a change

Yeah thank you. Perhaps I've been underestimating the engineers of these systems. They'd likely be excessively careful, no? The again, the whole threat is that the activity will outpace the supervision, the foresight - and this surpassing can only be anticipated to a degree.

Also didn't know there was more than one flash crash - I thought it was a specific event (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_crash)

weirdly i've just found a book on a wall called flash crash. it's about that guy from 2010 who crashed the markets from his parents' home. remember?

Yeah, before this thread I was under the impression the Flash Crash was a distinct event, rather than a category.

edit: Don't know anything about the or any flash crash, however.
