I rote a fing about Dune a couple of years back. (Yes, I know, it's craner-level - even luka-level! - spamming.)

Nice one

Loads of the stuff we've discussed re: the alt-right and Dune, Skyrim, Warhammer etc comes up here,
This put me in mind of Grapejuice's intro to Death Sweat... where he talks about imagination,

"From Gamergate to the Hugo Awards controversy, geek fascists struggle to make inroads into fan culture. The alt-right fights so hard over these genres because they want to lay claim to imagination’s potential to transcend the here and now."

Are we about to see a pivot to viewing Lynch's Dune as an underappreciated masterpiece?

It depends! Is this the Dino de Laurentiis version, or a proper untampered, not butchered by the producers, Lynch version? There were rumours on the "collectors" circuit of a 4 or 6 hour "uncut" version that was "true" to Lynch's vision - I'd buy that. There were glimpses in the theatrical release of what the film could have been - brief snatches of dream sequences / melange hallucinations, and some of the spice worm shots hinted that the film could have been good instead of the rubbish that we ended up with...but on the other hand: Sting...poor casting...

You know what, I mean obviously everyone in their right mind hates Sting, but I don't think he did too much wrong in the film, it's just his stupid face I guess. But the issues that spoil the film are much deeper than him, I reckon if the rest of it was sorted out we wouldn't even care, it's just that as the film is ultimately a bit of a mess, he ends up as being the cherry on the top of the shit, one final insult added to injury that we can easily all laugh at together.

yeah, I was being lazy sniping at Sting, because as you say there is far more wrong with the film. I might even revise my opinion as the character he plays is supposed to be an obnoxious dick, so actually it may have been a piece of inspired casting...

"If we had seven hours, I would demonstrate," Sting quipped when host James Lipton asked him to clarify the origins of the myth, prompting hoots and cheers from the audience."

Sting’s wife says five-hour tantric sex claim is BS

“Do you know who I blame for that? Bob Geldof. Him and Sting had gone to do an interview with a rock journalist and the interview turned into a drinking session. At one point, the journalist asked how long they could go for and Geldof said he was a three-minute man, but, as Sting did yoga, he could probably go for hours. And Sting said ‘Well, haven’t you heard of tantric sex?'”

Villeneuve's fillum (which is actually only the first of two planned parts) is out next month. Pretty positive review in Empire:

I've a sneaky feeling it'll be visually awesome but light on emotional engagement, like the Blade Runner sequel a few years ago. Definitely want to see it all the same.
