Nooooo....
It's odd cos I said to gf that we should go to cinema and watch it - I love going to cinema but somehow I never get round to it - and she just kept saying "no, not interested, I hate sci-fi, no I won't watch the trailer, I don't care if you think it's different or a classic, stop talking about it you prick, just fuck off, leave me alone, I really truly hate you and wish you were dead" and so on.

Then a couple of weeks ago it came out in Russia and she saw all this discussion on chat groups and her mates on social media and then she came to me "tell me about this Dune thing". It turns out that everyone she spoke to was raving about it and saying "I normally hate scifi but this absolutely amazing" and so on and I started to get my hopes up... but all you lot in the North have completely wiped out those hopes.

Maybe it's better to go in having realistic expectations... so, thanks, I guess, to all you brutally honest, crushingly prosaic destroyers of dreams.

I feel the same, I wish I got organised to go more often, last week I really wanted to see Candyman and on each day I had a vague to plan to go at the end of the day, but every time it got shunted by other things and now I guess if I do see it it will be years later on my laptop screen.

i still had a really good time in the cinema though. i love the experience, the soft seats and the big screen and loud noises! don't really care if the film isn't that good.

the one where someone played the bagpipe was the funniest of all of them 😂
Bagpipes originated in the Middle East though, so this could (in principle) be quite cool.

OK, so it's probably ridiculous, but I'm prepared to keep an open mind.

Rich she doesn't deserve a cinephile like yourself, it isn't meant to be, I'm sorry this is how it is

The majority of her sentence wasn't really related to the cinema though, it's just the way she normally speaks to me. I believe this kinda cutesy private language type stuff is fairly common amongst loving couples right? Right?

Perhaps I shouldn't have included that but hear, I know sometimes that powerfully felt and expressed true love can come across as secret sweet to observers and make them feel uncomfortable.

I love the big ones. We have one with a thousand seats here in Copenhagen. It feels like a great event being there.

The most basic level of the joy I feel when watching a movie is the simple excitement of inhabiting a vantage point and observing something - being on the outside looking in - this pleasure of not existing. The big cinemas enhance this feeling.

Yeah, as long as the film meets a certain, fairly low, standard then you can switch off and be absorbed for an hour or two. I get the same thing from sport too. When I play football or squash, all I'm doing is concentrating on the game, the world outside forgotten for a blissful hour or so. Body totally knackered but mind beautifully rested.

Let's Talk About Ceps
"For Ryan and other Dune-reading soldiers, the two wars in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan were even clearer echoes of Herbert’s vision. When Ryan describes serving as the commander of the Australian Army’s Reconstruction Task Force in Afghanistan’s Oruzgan Province in 2006 and 2007, he finds the parallels with Dune difficult to avoid. A spartan native population disillusioned with invaders after a previous superpower’s incursion, with the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan standing in for years of Harkonnen rule on Arrakis. Young locals whose tribal code of honor dictated that every casualty among them be avenged. The same cultural divisions—and the wholly different games each side was playing—always making victory more elusive than it first appeared."

Yesterday met up with and passed a pleasant evening with the leader of the vanguard of the dudes @suspended. There was however one moment of transatlantic misunderstanding when I told him that tomorrow I would be "Going to see Dune" and he said "What's that?" - which was of course greatly surprising you me. There have been a couple of people over the last six months or so who have taken me aback by not knowing about this film or the book it was based on... but Gus? I thought he'd even joined in the discussion on here, surely he was at least aware of it? But I repeated the name several times to no avail, it was only when I started describing it that a light of recognition appeared in his eyes and he said "ohhhhh... Doon!".

It sounded like he kept saying Jonah, I was dumbfounded.

Going to try and see this at the biggest IMAX possible – ensuring that even if the film is shit I'll get some sort of visual thrill.
