black ops (appreciation-type post)

village elder.
it's hard to deny War, which sounds fucking immense on a big system, and i really like Battle, but that's basically a reworking of War... other than that tho, a lot of the releases on black ops were pretty samey and average i reckon.

actually Do It / Fairground is pretty good.

Do not read this.
benjy how can you forget

Spanish Fly
How we get down an R
R-Ha
Invasion 1&2

And there is a silver one with 'BLACK OPS DUBPLATE' as the only thing on it that is fucking super deep.

And lets all not forget that Dread D is T.Williams, unbelievably talented guy.

Repetitive
I personally rate Cash Beat (Hoods Up Instrumental), Kettle and War the most. There were a fair few mediocre ones too though, it's undeniable.

I honestly don't think there's a single poor Black Ops release. I'm only missing two, maybe those ones are.

Plus the unreleased shit is the bollocks.

I need to chat to my mate who had a mini disc full of jon e cash beats that never came out.

He probably lost it, then again there is DJ Dice, he might have some stuff from back in the day.

Grime/Garage novelty trivia

Jon e cash was on Lush FM, used to MC for Bluedread. The management thought his mcing was so bad they kicked him off.

i got loads of their stuff cheap from independance and uptown. every grime producer from the mid 00s should be made to release a white label classics type album. in fact, if dj magic is reading this, can you do a white label classics series for grime producers? id like to see albums from waifa, skepta, etc.

bare BARE BONES
just download the tunes off soulseek and send Jon e Cash a fiver, better than paying for a bunch of transcoded mp3s on a cd

male pale and stale

This is the first in depth thing I've seen about the history of it all and it definitely has its moments.

There is predictably some grim misogyny at 1:15:00 ish though.

(It also suffers from classic hagiography but if you can't blow your own trumpet what's the point eh...)

Interesting also to see that Black Ops records are starting to increase in price on Discogs.

Oh yeah and Cash Beat / Hoods Up features on the Kurrupt FM mix CD...

listen to their MCs. its funny cos there is definietly something in the water there. its the same dumb spite and stupidity you see today in 1011. no subtlety. something in the water there.
