UK might have even invented it. The dominant look among my ultra hip colleagues and I is Trainspotting chic

Young people do dress all identical though. You used to be able to tell who was cool and had decent music taste and who to avoid by their tribal allegiance. Now the boys all wear NICCE tops and the girls all wear leggings and vans. I'd never have survived navigating my teens without the visual cues of fashion and culture.

seems the young cultured middle class today are into rustic organic fabrics, second hand, hand sewn, re-purposed materials

smart move by which you can simultaenously position yourself as non materialistic and eco friendly and distance yourself from the synthetic fabrics, print t-shirts from china that poor people buy from supermarkets

Do you think this is because the primary social landscape is online now, and the crucial cues, regarding tastes and allegiances, are coded into the new landscape? In which case, meatspace is left behind as a peripheral/supplemental mode of expression.

Maybe as cultures synthesize and brands are conglomerated, fashion finds some kind of equilibrium (or "optimal expression") and its diversity minimizes. That is, if people are more inclined to distinguish themselves online, rather than offline.

Kids don't all dress the same here although as ever within a group there is usually a uniform. What I recommend is every time you see a young person write down a description of their outfit and post it here. I used to do this all time (not just with young people thiugh). Its good writing practice.
