Beast of Burden
it is neither colorful nor fun

when British people were freaking out about Britain become an apocalyptic wasteland in the wake of Brexit

I don't recall any Americans coming on here and going "lol I hope Britain implodes into blood and misery lol"

in fact, I recall doing exactly the opposite and expressing my sincerely felt concern

Can I just point out that I said this...

I don't want America to collapse at all, because it is the last best hope of earth and the shining city on a hill.

...and I wasn't being facetious.

This is totally the relationship though isnt it - as craner mentioned just now over on the JamesBond thread - Why should Americans give a shit about this small bog-country, compared to the huge cultural magnetism exerted by America on UK. If we end up as a post apocalyptic wasteland that would have a very tiny effect on the US, but that's not the case vice versa

TBf to Luka, he pretty much was saying that about the UK as well
blessed are the peacemakers, Dan, but if that was the case (I don't remember) then, it wasn't my place to intervene, not being directly affected

seems like a reasonable request, not to repeatedly make cackling ill-wishes for the place I live to collapse into apocalyptic violence

pretty lame I have even make that request in the first place, let alone that I get pushback on it

Oh yeah, agreed totally. I was being sarcastic - I find Luka's nihilism and hard on for destruction as grating as you do.

I'm not nihilistic at all. Far from it. But I don't think dissensus is at its best when it becomes a kangaroo court for putting my personality on trial.

I grate on some people grate on me. There are differences of opinion and differences of temperament. It's unfortunate but unavoidable. Danny and Padriag, you're both lovely, positive and bubbly personalities in real life and I'm sorry I wind you up.

I'm not putting your personality on trial

I'd just like you to stop publicly rooting for America to collapse into apocalyptic chaos

it seems like you're willing to stop doing that, and if that's the case, I'm happy to move on and get back to talking about the election

Tea, i just told you this is not a kangaroo court. I'm not obliged to fall into line with your standards of behaviour

It's incredibly difficult to think your way out of liberalism and attempts to do so tend to end in absurdities, like Mark's half hearted and clearly disengenous paeans to North Korea. But the very absurdity of that position represents the violence needed to tear away from liberalism.

Wasn't his project with music writing monomaniacally focused on constant cultural progress, a very liberal idea at its core?

He had that as an ideal. But he also said music doesn't always progress and that this failure to progress was why the music of his childhood was cool and today's music was boring.

His thesis on North Korea was all to do with his hostility to individualism. It was a rhetorical device to make this point, it was just a really, really appallingly bad one. He told me he was going to title the essay 'North Korea as Utopia' which is when I felt I had to intervene!

If you grew up in the west and you say you're anti individualism, pro collectivism, no one is really going to believe you no matter how red in the face you get. If you say we should join together to kill the reptilians, that makes sense, or even to win concessions from the reptilians. That's normal. That's being on the left.

If you say it would be nice if there was more social cohesion and solidarity. That's normal too. That's not even left or right. That's just something that would be quite nice.

people are beginning to realize that the democratic party is one big con game of smiles and hollow dictums. Bernie Sanders' politics weren't so much an issue by themselve, it was more that his style of politics was completely antithetical to the democratic edifice and would expose them all naked in their ugly contorted imposture

er...that and the fact that the Democratic Party prefers to nominate a Democrat.
