hash browns might not be 'traditional' but they're ubiquitous and they're delicious. Halloumi is pretty common now too, also delicious.
I don't like English breakfast tomatoes though. Can live without that.
Yeah, I never used to like tomatoes unless they'd been cooked down into a sauce. I've recently come round to liking the very small, sweet, perfectly spherical ones, but the big massive watery ones can still fuck off. Eurgh.

Halloumi is brilliant.

Sorry, but peanut butter is plain gross. It even manages to look like a combination of spew and excrement.

There was a program on about it last night where they ‘investigate‘ food production and manufacturing - peanut butter and anchovies. The peanut butter getting filled into jars was pure 2 girls 1 cup land.

But mainly excrement. My children love the stuff (crunchy) and I'm forever cleaning it - wiping it - from knives they leave strewn about the kitchen.
It has the mealy texture of turd.
Also makes me think of Jimmy Carter, peanut farmer.

my English wife is repulsed by even the notion of combining peanut butter and chocolate, yet Reese's peanut butter cups and pieces are one of the most popular treats here. do most English people dislike it? is sweet/savory combo in general not a thing?

Reese’s = orangemen.

One of our kids is allergic to them. All my life salted peanuts were a snack favourite. Those packet rungs in the pub that revealed a bit of cleavage underneath, so you’d buy 3 packs. Then you breed and all the fun ends right there. I make a point of blaming my wife’s genetics.

It’s a brutal allergy. We caught it early via a skin prick test. Luckily, food labelling is pretty good today. No-one wants to be that French girl dying from a food allergy mid-air (or anywhere). Now I can’t have peanuts in the house, shed or car ‘just in case’.

They sell them in UK, not everywhere but not uncommon either. Why not chocolate and peanut butter, that's often quite sweet anyway?
I love sweet and savoury... lots of things have that; pineapple in pizza, mango in curry, apricot in tagine... cranberry with Turkey, apple with pork, quince with cheese, coca cola with chicken, sweet chilli sauce, bacon jam, relish on burgers... etc etc

cosign all of the above, except for pineapple on pizza. I'll never ever be on board with pineapple on pizza.

They were just examples of stuff we eat in UK - mostly stolen from other countries in - but come to think of it I do like almost all of them. The other day had black pudding with a load of burned pineapple on top - was great.

yeah, same here. not sure what it is about pineapple on pizza -- maybe pineapple is a different kind of sweetness, or what I imagine to be the clashing of acids in pineapple and tomato sauce -- but I'm repulsed by the thought of it. come to think of it, I might also have a hard time with bacon jam.

peanut butter and banana is a great filling for a sandwich

a childhood staple, still enjoy them once in awhile.

@IdleRich: while I still eat meat, I swore off foie gras years ago (not that I ever had it more than a few times anyway). I know it's an absurd distinction, killing an animal is wrong either way, but FG just crosses the cruel/gross line for even me. there are high-end restaurants here that use it as an ingredient in their $50 burger, probably pretty awesome but I just can't do it.
