class prostheses

Do you think advertising and marketing are, or are at least becoming, the primary means of influencing ideology? Seeing as all, or nearly all, values can be appealed to and coaxed into taking their wallet out.

hmmm yes partly. i think the advertising industry and the impact of brands on culture is mostly parasitic, sometimes an accelerator, amplifier, dilutor but behind the ideological edge

in another sense everything is PR, market logic affects even the most radical and anti-capitalist ideology by necessity. this isn't contradictory is it? mass communication and innovations in influencing were spurred by profit motive and everyone uses the technology

I fear I'm missing your point here, are you trying to figure out how it is that anti-capitalist ideology can be sustained by the same motives as capitalist ideology?

I read that as Glass prostheses like the woman in The Saddest Music in the World
'The Saddest Music in the World' is a kind of pastiche of 1920s film-making, with interspersed scenes in cod-Technicolour; but to really give a flavour of its oddness, I should say that it's the tale of an amputee brewery heiress with a pair of glass legs, filled up with beer

This (below) sounds very familiar
You just stick a bunch of history podcasts on double speed at the gym and suddenly you're a history expert as well as being in shape.
My brother had a friend who apparently used to watch silent films on double-speed so he could see more of them than anyone else.
There was that thing a few years back where it had very good cheat notes on books and there was a debate between someone who had just read the notes and an English professor who was an expert on the book - quite interesting.
Sometimes I feel as though I'm doing something like this trying to learn Portuguese with Duolingo though.

Powerful people write concisely and let typos slide to show you that they're busy and that what you think of them doesn't matter...that's why they use Anti-Grammarly.

Anything to do with Yanis Varoufakis and the "Progressive International"? Pretty sure all those guys were involved. Even Bernie Sanders.

I tend to correct typos, but sometimes I leave them. Sometimes I just prefer the way a typo looks. Same with lists or whatever, sometimes I feel bullet points look better, sometimes dashes. I dunno what the logic behind it is.

Apparently Christopher Walken speaks the way he does because he decided to put commas/pauses into things where he thought they should be rather than where they were. Hope it's true.

Perfect grammar in one on one messaging is creepy as fuck. women messaging me with perfect grammar and spelling will be marked down very harshly

We were meant to do a thread on class performativity so this can be it. @WashYourHands did a good post about patronising his pleb cousins, mirroring their ignorance to fit in

anything that trades on the promise of elevating physical appearance in the same way as expensive clothes

tooth whitening

cosmetic surgery - literal augmentation - in general tho not always

large swathes of the skincare, wellness, fitness, etc industries

all things with an actual use value which can and are also marketed as class aspirational

think of Patrick Bateman's extensive skincare, fitness, etc routines

a startup called "Grammarly," which promises to fix your bad prose and make you look like a respectable and well-educated member of society
should've just called it Pygmalion and forced people to learn about George Bernard Shaw at the same time

killing multiple boards with one stone = greater class-augmentation optimization
