A kind of reverse one. We were in the Russian supermarket in Lisbon today and the person in front of us bought a bag of ten million sunflower seeds - catalysed by that gf told me that when she was growing up her mum absolutely forbade her to ever consume a single seed lest she forever be confirmed as a squatting slav in tracksuit. Apparently whenever someone offered her some seeds to eat she would always have to scour her pockets for ages afterwards to make sure that not a single piece of the shell or anything would ever come out in the wash or turn up anywhere to give her away.

Love the idea that eating a single sunflower seed could a set you inexorably on the path towards drinking vodka straight from the bottle and listening exclusively to hardbass.

Status symbol= wealth and power
Class prostheses= in on the exclusive social cues of the well manicured elite. Hence Grammarly as the inspiration to the thread- it makes you sound educated.

Yeah the prosthesis bit seems to emphasize an artificiality. Because faking it can make it.

Instead of changing what you are, you change what you appear to be, which can be just as effective, provided nobody audits too deeply.

the prostheses is also necessary. a status symbol is extraneous, it can only be a status symbol if its unessential, while the prostheses is an important facet of social spheres i.e. classes- the mean girls kicking Suzy out of the group for wearing last years shoes.

likewise some bars over here have a 'no Jordans' rule (the shoes), an anti-class prostheses, though thats just a blatantly racist practice which isn't one to one with class.

So if it functions to reposition you socially/socio-economically, or secure your given position, then its a prothesis? Whereas a status symbol is more of a static indication rather than something that dynamically effects the person's social position?

Maybe not static, I'm sure we'd find status symbols sets things in motion if we thought about it, but yah. the simple difference is that the status symbol is had to stand out and the class prostheses to fit in. Status symbols and class prostheses are corollary intra- and inter- class dynamics.
