I still forget I have a phone and don't touch it for days at a time. I don't think I'm addicted, I've had to force myself to use it

they made you addicted and now you can stream how they did it on their very own platforms, and after you've finished, the next show will autoplay.

Netflix isn't that evil IMO. There are tricks in there to addict you of course but I don't think Netflix is radicalising people like Facebook is. The content on it is variable in quality but is certainly more substantive than the stuff you get on Facebook. There's no (blatant) advertising on Netflix. Some shows on Netflix will make you feel bad about your life but only as much as some TV shows will. Conspiracy theories about vaccines and the flat earth aren't flourishing on Netflix.

No doubt a right winger would say Netflix is inculcating me and others in a liberal woke conspiracy and hard letters would have a similar sort of critique. I wouldn't say Netflix is innocent, and of course it's something that sucks up time like all these other things. But it's a lesser evil, I think.

The critique of Netflix and Spotify must be more about the money they take from artists, the destructive effect they have on the arts industries. Not to be discounted of course but for users I think they're relatively benign.

It does make you conscious of the dopamine reward thing.

My one post social dilemma achievement has been to cancel my useless audible membership at last. When you cancel they offer you various incentives to stay on and I observed myself almost giving in to these persuasive tactics despite having realised long long ago that I never listen to most of what I download from it I just get a buzz from having something new.

I must say there is of course an unspoken admiration for the silicon valley nerds and intelligence agency toffs who realised how they could manipulate the whole world with this stuff and did it right under our collective noses. It would never have occurred to me, that's for sure. I just wanted to use it to watch porn and launch my career as Oxfordshire's answer to Chester P.
